Keith Mitchell to Miss the Cut (+154)
There are multiple factors to help narrow down our best bets for this tournament. Among the most important include iron play, major championship experience, and recent form.
At the Old Course, iron play is by far the most crucial element for success as the historic links course favors those who can put themselves on the greens in regulation and avoid hazards. The best iron players will have a significant advantage over the rest of the field as the wind is expected to be howling this week at St Andrews, which will be further amplified at this links course.
The first golfer we are fading this week is Keith Mitchell. Major championships have not been a place of success for Mitchell as he has missed the cut in four of his last six majors (67%). In his two Open Championship appearances, Mitchell has missed the cut each time.
My main concern for Mitchell is his approach game. This season, Mitchell ranks just 128th on TOUR in SG Approach the Green.
As I mentioned above, iron play is essential and if Mitchell has difficulties sticking his approach shots, It could be a long two days before the weekend. The reason we are getting this great value on Mitchell is due to his recent form, as he has made the cup in six straight tournaments.
That being said, this field is much more difficult and the necessity of strong iron play may be his enemy.
Lucas Herbert to Miss the Cut (+142)
The other golfer we are fading this week is Lucas Herbert. There may not be a course more unsuited for Herbertâs game than a major championship event at the Old Course at St Andrews.
Herbert has been one of the worst iron players on TOUR this season as he ranks just 198th in SG Tee to Green and 202nd in SG Approach the Green. Furthermore, Herbert has been nothing special at major championships as he has missed the cut in half of his career appearances.
At the 2021 Open Championship, Herbert missed the cut. His recent form is not any better as he has missed the cut in each of his last two tournaments and in four of his last seven (57%).
Horrible iron play, poor recent form, and underwhelming major championship history makes Herbert a good fade candidate this week.
Best of luck!
