2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup Odds, Picks & Predictions: Thursday (9/21)

The 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup tips off late Thursday night in Australia, as Sydney will play host to the tournament that runs until October 1st. To the surprise of no one, the United States (-750) come into the tournament as massive favorites, as they will look to build on their record 10 championships.

Let’s take a closer look at the first day of action and how things are shaping up.

Thursday Best Bets

USA -23 (-110) vs. Belgium

The United States will kick off Group A with one of the toughest tests in the group with Belgium. They come into the tournament on a 22-game winning streak and have enough talent and depth to field likely two teams that would be favored in this group.

Belgium was a team that USA previously faced this year in Washington, DC in February, so theoretically, they shouldn’t have much issue defeating them. In the 84-75 win, Team USA let off the gas late which I don’t expect they do in this one.

Additionally, a closer look shows the Belgians have struggled in various recent competitions, including the 2020 Olympics and both of their previous two Women’s EuroBasket games. Led by Sabrina Ionescu I like for Team USA to make an opening game statement with a big win.

Canada -3 (-110) vs. Serbia

Currently the #4 ranked team in the world, Canada comes into this game to face the #10 ranked Serbia. Natalie Achonwa and Bridget Carletone will be the leaders in representing Canada in Australia.

The most remarkable development, though, is the return of their star Kia Nurse, who is playing basketball competitively for the first time in 11 months at the World Cup after suffering a torn ACL in her right knee. I don’t see Serbia having an answer for her, and for Nurse to be the difference here.
