2023 British Open: Best PGA Longshot Odds, Picks & Predictions

With last week’s Genesis Scottish Open in the rear-view mirror, we now look forward to this week’s British Open. Royal Liverpool Golf Club will host this event for the 13th time in tournament history.

Royal Liverpool is a par-71, 7,313-yard track designed by Harry Colt that has undergone some drastic changes since Rory McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug here in 2014, including Hole 17 transforming from a par 4 to a par 3 and Hole 10 playing as a par 4 instead of a par 5.

In typical British Open fashion, Royal Liverpool is a traditional European links course with swirling winds, not too different from The Renaissance Club at last week’s Genesis Scottish Open.

Below, I will give out my two best longshot bets to win the 2023 British Open.

2023 British Open: Best Longshot Bets

These plays are 0.3u and 0.15u, or 0.3% and 0.15% of your betting bankroll.

Bryson DeChambeau (+6600 via PointsBet): 0.3u

The first golfer we are targeting this week is Bryson DeChambeau, who currently sits at 66/1 via PointsBet. Do not let his 100th OWGR fool you, DeChambeau is striking the ball among the world’s elite right now. Unfortunately, the OWGR committee is still figuring out how to properly allocate global points for the LIV guys, but that is a whole other argument for a different time.

This is not the DeChambeau-of-old, the guy who just relies on powerful drives before defecting to LIV Golf. No, he has completely re-tooled his game since joining the rival tour and has become a much stronger all-around player.

These changes in his game have, predictably, paid dividends. Entering this week in great form, DeChambeau has finished inside the Top 10 in three of his past four LIV tournaments.

Not only is he excelling on the LIV Your, but he has contended in each of the past three major championships. DeChambeau posted a T4 finish at the PGA Championship, T20 finish at the U.S. Open, and a T8 finish at last year’s British Open.

Many see a links course with swirling winds that will require creativity and finesse over power and immediately discredit DeChambeau, which is probably why PointsBet is still hanging 66/1 in the outright market. But, as mentioned above, he is not the same golfer now as he was on the PGA TOUR, and I think we see him claim another major championship sooner rather than later.

Talor Gooch (+8000 via FanDuel): 0.15u

Another golfer to target this week is Talor Gooch, who currently sits at 80/1 via FanDuel. Simply put, the market is not respecting the LIV guys as much as it should.

I think the big names from the rival tour will have another strong showing at this major championship, similar to the U.S. Open where LIV-defector Brooks Koepka claimed his fifth major championship. These guys have spent much more time overseas this year than the PGA TOUR, playing on European links-style courses similar to what we will see at Royal Liverpool.

Gooch has been the king of LIV this season, boasting a tour-leading three wins. Yes, he missed the cut at the PGA Championship, which is part of the reason why we are catching this monster number.

However, he also made the cut at the Masters Tournament en route to a 34th-place finish. I do not feel as strongly about Gooch this week as the other big-name LIV guys, but 80/1 is just too long of a number to pass up.
