However, instead of the backdrop at this year’s French Open being a competition between the two of them to see who could win the record-setting 23rd Grand Slam, all eyes are on Djokovic as Nadal has withdrawn from Roland Garros with a hip injury. Thus, for the first time since 2004, Nadal will not compete in the French Open, which leaves a huge void in this tournament, considering his 14 titles are the most by any male of female tennis player at any single Grand Slam in history. Instead, the narrative changes to Djokovic’s sole pursuit of history, and if he can continue the legacy of the Big Three’s dominance. However, the younger generation is pounding on the doorstep, led by world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, the favorite heading into Roland Garros. Andrey Rublev

2023 French Open Betting Predictions

Rublev’s French Open results have been a mixed bag, with two first round exits and two quarterfinals appearances. He does not enter Roland Garros with the most confidence, as he lost to qualifier Yannick Hanfmann in three sets in the Round of 16 in Rome. Rublev did not have a first-serve percentage better than 65% in any of his three Italian Open matches, which was an issue considering he only converted on 22.2% (6 of 27) break point chances throughout the tournament.

Rublev’s Monte Carlo title where he beat Holger Rune in three sets does raise his ceiling for clay-court expectations. Given his propensity for early bowouts, it would be worth throwing some money on the underdog for his first round match, but expect Rublev to go on a decent run if he gets the monkey off his back and wins his first round match.

Jannik Sinner

2023 French Open Betting Predictions

Per Mario Boccardi on Twitter, Sinner is one of four players (Rune, Alcaraz, Medvedev are the others) to appear in three or more Masters semifinals since Paris-Bercy 2022. Many will nitpick Sinner’s loss Round of 16 loss to Francisco Cerundolo in Rome, but that Cerundolo also improved to a respectable 5-6 vs. top-10 players with that win.

Sinner has reached the fourth round or better in all three French Open appearances, but that seems like the ceiling for him as his fitness for five-set matches has long been in question given that he has yet to reach a semifinal at a Grand Slam.

Felix Auger-Aliassime

Perhaps no men’s top-10 player comes into Roland Garros with less momentum than Felix Auger-Aliassime. Auger-Aliassime recently went a calendar month without winning a match, losing three consecutive matches to players ranked outside the top 30. He recently ended that losing streak with wins at the Lyon Open, but a recent interview in Estoril where he was quoted as saying “It feels like the year has been so long!” does not inspire confidence heading into a Grand Slam. FAA went into the clay season with a 12-7 record this year, which suggests he is struggling to find his groove on ay surface.

Auger-Aliassime’s wins in Lyon were his first on clay this season, but it was not the most star-studded field of all the French Open tuneups. Given that he has not played much high-level tennis since his injury, he is the most susceptible to a first round upset of all players ranked in the top-10, which would be his third first-round exit of the last four years.
