2023 French Open Picks & Predictions: Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, Caroline Garcia

For as much as Rafael Nadal has dominated the men’s side of the French Open with 14 career titles, there has been much more parity on the women’s side. The second major of the season begins on May 28, with the women’s final taking place on June 10. Roland Garros has celebrated eight different women’s champions in the last nine years, with Iga Swiatek (2020, 2022) the only repeat winner in that span. That is much of the reason Swiatek is the overwhelming odds-on favorite to win her fourth Grand Slam, as she looks to capitalize on the void left by Ashleigh Barty and Serena Williams as the next most dominant player in women’s tennis. Is a third title at Roland Garros a formaility at this point for Swiatek, or will the tournament’s parity result in yet another unforeseen winner? Read on for our thoughts and predictions for the top contenders at the 2023 French Open.

2023 French Open Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions

Here is our betting outlook for the 2023 French Open.

Jessica Pegula

2023 French Open Betting Predictions

Pegula’s French Open results have improved each of the last two years, from a third-round exit in 2021 to a quarterfinals apperance last year. This year’s draw was a bit of good news/bad news for Pegula, as she dreq arguably the toughest first-round opponent of any top contender in compatriot Danielle Collins. However, the rest of the draw sets up nicely for her, as she arguably has the easiest potential quarterfinal opponent in Maria Sakkari.

2023 French Open Betting Advice & Picks

Pegula cannot be considered a serious threat to win the French Open since she failed to reach the finals in Charleston and Madrid, and shockingly lost her first round match at the Italian Open in her last tournament. However, she also reached the finals in doubles at Roland Garros last year, and a semifinal appearance for Pegula this year is not out of the cards.

Elena Rybakina

2023 French Open Betting Predictions

It may not be long until Elena Rybakina claims the No. 1 world ranking. Rybakina was runner-up at the Australian Open, and also finished second in Miami while adding a title at Indian Wells to her resume. In addition, her clay-court confidence should be at an all-time high thanks to her win in Rome, which involved her taking a set off Swiatek before the world No. 1 had to retire. Rybakina’s powerful serve and heavy groundstrokes are usually considered more of a weapon on grass and hard court surfaces, but those parts of her arsenal were on full display in her Italian Open finals victory over Anhelina Kalinina when she blasted 21 winners in an injury-shortened match.

2023 French Open Betting Advice & Picks

If Swiatek is in a tier of her own as far as top contenders to win this year’s French Open, Rybakina should be considered the top choice from the second tier. Rybakina would almost assuredly be favored over whoever she faced in the finals if she won her potential semifinal match against Swiatek.

Caroline Garcia

2023 French Open Betting Predictions

Just two French women since 1967 and one since 2000 (Mary Pierce) have won at Roland Garros, so Caroline Garcia has a huge obstacle to overcome from a historical perspective. Garcia is in the same quarter as world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, but does own a 3-2 head-to-head advantage over her. If the clay courts in this year’s French Open play to faster-than-average conditions, that would favor Garcia and her dominant serve. That is why Garcia has been so successful on hard court, as her three WTA Finals victories all came on that surface. And in her semifinal run at the US Open last year, Garcia did not face a single break point in either of her first two matches, and was broken just three times total before her loss to Ons Jabeur. Garcia did win a double’s championship at Roland Garros last year.

2023 French Open Betting Advice & Picks

Given that Garcia has +5000 odds or longer at most sportsbooks, her ceiling is most likely a quarterfinal loss to Aryna Sabalenka.
