2023 Kentucky Derby: Skinner Odds, Picks & Predictions

The road to the 2023 Kentucky Derby is long, but it’s finally time to start looking at potential contenders. One horse that is catching people’s attention is Skinner, a three-year-old colt who has been impressing in his early races. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Skinner’s horse profile and examine his chances at Churchill Downs in 2023.

2023 Kentucky Derby Predictions: Skinner

  • Post Position: 9
  • Odds: 20/1

Skinner took third place at the Santa Anita Derby, but never really showed the ability to win the race that was taken by Practical Move. He will be ridden by Juan Hernandez who is making his Kentucky Derby debut and has never ridden Skinner in a race. With just one win in six races, this horse is outmatched by the field.

Skinner Profile

Skinner is a bay colt bred in Kentucky by Gainesway Thoroughbreds Ltd. He is sired by Into Mischief, a stallion known for producing top-class runners such as Authentic, Goldencents, and Practical Joke. Skinner’s dam is Lemon Lady, who was unplaced in her racing career but has produced several other winners.

Skinner is owned by The Elkstone Group LLC and trained by Brad Cox, who has already had considerable success in the Kentucky Derby with horses like Essential Quality and Mandaloun. Skinner debuted at Churchill Downs on June 3rd, 2022, in a six-furlong maiden special weight race. He broke alertly and settled into third position before making a strong move on the turn and powering clear to win by three lengths.

Skinner’s next start was in the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs on July 2nd, 2022. He was sent off as the 3-2 favorite in a field of seven, and he did not disappoint. Once again, he showed an impressive turn of foot, coming from just off the pace to win by two lengths over Dreaming of Louie.

These two victories have put Skinner on the map as a potential Kentucky Derby contender. His speed figures are competitive with other top three-year-olds, and he has shown a versatile running style that should serve him well as he faces tougher competition in graded stakes races.

Skinner’s pedigree suggests that he should be able to handle the classic distance of 1 1/4 miles in the Kentucky Derby. His sire, Into Mischief, has produced multiple graded stakes winners at distances ranging from six furlongs to 1 1/8 miles, and his dam’s side of the pedigree includes stamina influences such as A.P. Indy and Deputy Minister.
