Todayâs 2023 NBA Summer League Best Bets
Here are our top picks for todayâs 2023 NBA Summer League action.
Heat vs. Lakers
The Miami Heat will compete with Nikola Jovic, Jamal Cain, Jaime Jaquez, and Orlando Robinson. Those are the four notable players. They'll also bring in Jamaree Bouyea, Alondres Williams, and many rookies trying to make a name for themselves. Jovic could be a breakout star for the Heat. He rarely played last season but is said to have a lot of potential after being a first-round pick last year. Meanwhile, the Lakers starting five will likely include Max Christie, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Scotty Pippen Jr., Cole Swider, and Maxwell Lewis. They've also brought in a lot of SEC talent, including Colin Castleton, Alex Fudge, and D'Moi Hodge. We'll know more about both teams after Game 1. But the Lakers seem to have more depth heading into Game 1. Let's back the Lakers -3.
Pick: Lakers -3
Grizzlies vs. 76ers
Memphis has a lot of young talent competing in the Summer League this year. They'll have Jake LaRavia, Kenneth Lofton Jr., and David Roddy, the three most familiar names. They've also added a lot of foreign talent to their roster, which will be interesting. On the other hand, the 76ers will compete with Jaden Springer and Louis King. The rest of the roster is a mystery. They've added solid young talents like Terquavion Smith, Azuolas Tubelis, Filip Petrusev, Rickey Council IV, Marcus Bagley, and Javonte Smart. It might be harder for some international players to fit in right away. Let's back the 76ers +3.5.
Pick: 76ers +3.5
Spurs vs. Hornets
NBA fans will need to wait a few days for the debut of No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama, while the Hornets will play Brandon Miller. Those were the first two picks of the NBA Draft. The Spurs will have familiar names like Malaki Branham, Sidy Cissoko, Dominick Barlow, and Julian Champagnie, all on contract with at least a two-way deal with San Antonio. The squad also has Sir'Jabari Rice and Erick Stevenson, both college standouts. On the other hand, the Hornets have so much exciting young talent. Miller will play alongside Nick Smith Jr., James Bouknight, Bryce McGowens, Kobi Simmons, Xavier Sneed, Kai Jones, and James Nnaji. Charlotte is deep with talent and will likely play better than San Antonio tonight, especially without Wembanyama.
Pick: Hornets -6.5
Thunder vs. Jazz
The Thunder will get to watch Chet Holmgren in action. He was their first pick last season but was injured before the regular season began. Holmgren will also play with both Jaylin and Jalen Williams, along with Ousmane Dieng. Oklahoma City also brought in a lot of exciting talent from college, including Hunter Maldanado, Adam Flagler, and Keyontae Johnson. Tre Mann will also be on the team. They'll face Utah, who will allow Taylor Hendricks, Keyonte George, and Brice Sensabough their first chances to shine in a Jazz jersey. All three of those guys were first-round selections by Utah. Both teams have a ton of offensive talent. I'll take the Over 167.5.
Pick: Over 167.5
Warriors vs. Kings
In the last game of tonight's slate, the Warriors will take on the Kings. Golden State will debut Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis tonight. Those were their two selections in the NBA Draft this season. However, the rest of the team doesn't look so appealing. Kendric Davis can always go off on the offensive end. But he's it when it comes to depth. The Kings have so much more depth, including Keegan Murray, who will get another chance at leading the Kings in the Summer League. He'll play alongside Kessler Edwards, Colby Jones, and Jalen Swanson. There's more experience on this roster, and that should help them get passed the Warriors.
Pick: Kings -5
