2023 Preakness Stakes: Chase the Chaos Odds, Picks & Predictions

The Preakness Stakes is one of the most prestigious horse racing events in the world. Held annually, it is the second leg of the Triple Crown after the Kentucky Derby and before the Belmont Stakes. Every year, top trainers, jockeys, and thoroughbred horses from all over the United States converge at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, for this thrilling showcase of speed, stamina, and strategy. Among the contenders for the 2023 Preakness Stakes is one particular colt that has captured the attention of racing enthusiasts and insiders alike: Chase the Chaos.

2023 Preakness Stakes Predictions: Chase the Chaos

  • Post Position: 2
  • Odds: 50/1

Chase the Chaos is making his first start outside of the state of California after a two-month layoff. He earned a spot in this race via a victory in the El Camino Real Derby in February. In such a small field, anything is possible. But this horse doesn’t appear likely to factor into the equation.

Chase the Chaos Profile

Chase the Chaos is a three-year-old bay colt by Into Mischief out of Runaway Song, bred by SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, and Frederick Hertrich III. His sire, Into Mischief, is a multiple graded stakes-winning stallion who has sired numerous high-profile winners such as Authentic, Goldencents, and Practical Joke. Chase the Chaos was sold as a yearling at the 2021 Keeneland September Sale for $600,000 to owners Three Chimneys Farm and e Five Racing Thoroughbreds.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, who has won the Preakness Stakes twice before with Super Saver in 2010 and Rags to Riches in 2007, Chase the Chaos has shown great potential in his early racing career. He made his debut at Gulfstream Park in January 2022, finishing second in a maiden special weight race. He then won his next two starts, both allowance races at Tampa Bay Downs and Aqueduct Racetrack, respectively. In his most recent race, the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds Race Course, he finished third behind Midnight Bourbon and Mandaloun, two other top contenders for the Triple Crown races.

Chase the Chaos has several qualities that make him a promising candidate for the Preakness Stakes. Firstly, he has shown excellent acceleration and closing speed, which is crucial in a race that is 1 3/16 miles long. He tends to save his energy early on and then make a late surge to overtake his opponents in the stretch. Secondly, he has demonstrated versatility in terms of running style. He can adapt to different track conditions and race setups and has won from both on and off the pace. Thirdly, he has a solid pedigree that suggests he can handle the demanding distance and level of competition in the Preakness Stakes. His dam, Runaway Song, is a stakes-placed mare who is a half-sister to two other stakes winners, and his second dam is a full sister to the Grade 1 winner Harlan’s Holiday.

However, there are also some factors that may pose challenges for Chase the Chaos in the Preakness Stakes. Firstly, he has not yet competed at the Grade 1 level, which is a significant step up in class and intensity. Secondly, he has never raced at Pimlico Race Course, which has a unique track layout and surface that favors some horses over others.
