2023 Preakness Stakes Predictions: Coffeewithchris
- Post Position: 4
- Odds: 20/1
Making his first graded stakes start, Coffeewithchris could set the early pace in a race that isnât expected to have a ton of speed. The local entrant has 12 career starts primarily in Maryland, and has two wins to his name at Laurel Park. While it would make for a great story, this horse likely doesnât have enough to be a real factor.

Coffeewithchris Profile
Coffeewithchris is a four-year-old bay colt currently owned by Kevin Plankâs Sagamore Farm and trained by Michael Matz. The horse was bred in Kentucky by James Lauffer and W.D. Cubbedge and was sired by Distorted Humor, a multiple graded stakes-winning stallion. Distorted Humor has sired many successful racehorses, including the likes of Any Given Saturday, Drosselmeyer, and Funny Cide.
Coffeewithchris made his racing debut in October 2020, where he competed in a Maiden Special Weight race at Belmont Park. Despite the inexperience, he put in a commendable performance, finishing second by a nose behind the winner. Coffeewithchris then went on to win his next two starts, capturing both the seven-furlong Aqueduct Maiden Special Weight and the one-mile Parx Starter Allowance.
The 2023 Preakness Stakes will be Coffeewithchrisâ biggest test yet. The talented colt has demonstrated an impressive turn of foot and a willingness to battle in his previous races. This, coupled with his breeding, suggests that he has the ability to be competitive in a race of this magnitude.
Leading into the Preakness Stakes, Coffeewithchris has been preparing under the careful guidance of trainer Michael Matz. Matz is renowned for his ability to train top-class racehorses, having famously trained 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro.
