2023 Preakness Stakes: Mage Odds, Picks & Predictions

The Preakness Stakes is one of the biggest horse racing events in the world, attracting millions of fans from around the globe. It is an American Grade I stakes race held annually at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The Preakness Stakes is the second leg of the Triple Crown, preceded by the Kentucky Derby and followed by the Belmont Stakes. Ahead of the 2023 Preakness Stakes, all eyes are on Mage, the 2023 Kentucky Derby winner.

2023 Preakness Stakes Predictions: Mage

  • Post Position: 3
  • Odds: 8/5

The winner of the Kentucky Derby is also the only Derby participant running in the Preakness, the first time that’s happened since 1948. After closing at 15/1 in his winning run at Chuchill Downs, all eyes will be on Mage at Pimlico in a race that isn’t exactly star-studded. Mage came back from 13 lengths behind to win the Kentucky Derby. Now the question will be whether jockey Javier Castellano can put the horse in at least a slightly better position off a couple of weeks rest. The question will be whether Mage has enough gas in the tank to secure the second leg of the Triple Crown against more well-rested competitors.

Mage Profile

Mage is a three-year-old brown colt that was born on February 5th, 2020. He is sired by the stallion Pioneerof the Nile, who is the sire of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh, and out of the mare Fantasia, who was sired by the world-renowned stallion Galileo.

As a two-year-old, Mage showed a lot of promise in his debut race, finishing second in a six-furlong sprint at Churchill Downs. He then went on to win his next two races impressively, which included the G3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs in July 2022.

His most impressive performance to date, however, came at the G1 Breeders’ Futurity held at Keeneland in October 2022. Despite facing stiff competition from the likes of Echo Zulu, Second Twist, and The Red Knight, Mage put on a dominant display and won the race by a comfortable margin of three lengths.

Mage’s strong performances and impressive pedigree have made him a potential Triple Crown contender. However, he will have to overcome stiff competition from other top horses like Hot Rod Charlie, Essential Quality, and Life Is Good to claim victory at the Preakness Stakes.

Mage will be trained by Brad Cox, who is one of the most respected trainers in the sport. Cox’s impressive record includes victories in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Kentucky Oaks. His ability to develop horses like Essential Quality and Monomoy Girl makes him a perfect fit for Mage, who has shown the potential for greatness.
