2023 Preakness Stakes: Red Route One Odds, Picks & Predictions

The Preakness Stakes, one of the most prestigious horse races in the world, will take place on May 20, 2023, at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. One of the horses that will participate in the race is Red Route One, a promising three-year-old colt. Let’s take a closer look at his background, performance, and chances of winning the race.

2023 Preakness Stakes Predictions: Red Route One

  • Post Position: 5
  • Odds: 10/1

Red Route One won the Bath House Row to land a spot in the Preakness. Jockey Joel Rosario rode Disarm in the Kentucky Derby, another one of trainer Steve Asmussen’s horses. The horse finished fourth despite 25-1 odds. Perhaps Rosario and Asmussen have something going for them, but Red Route One doesn’t have an overly impressive finish to his name, and he was just sixth at the Arkansas Derby. This horse is one you can add to the back end of a trifecta or superfecta or just leave out altogether.

Red Route One Profile

Red Route One is a chestnut colt bred by Darley Farms and trained by Bob Baffert. He was sired by American Pharoah, the legendary Triple Crown winner of 2015, and out of Chasing Our Dreams, a mare who has produced several stakes winners. Red Route One was purchased by his current owner, Stonestreet Farm, for $1.7 million at the Keeneland Yearlings Sale in September 2020.

Performance:

Red Route One made his racing debut on January 1, 2023, at Santa Anita Park, where he won a six-furlong maiden special weight race by three lengths. He followed up with another victory in a seven-furlong allowance race at the same track on February 5, where he showed his versatility by coming from behind to win by half a length. On March 5, Red Route One stepped up to stakes company for the first time in the Grade III San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita, where he finished second behind Life Is Good, another highly-regarded colt trained by Bob Baffert. Red Route One ran a courageous race, setting the early pace before getting passed by Life Is Good in the stretch and finishing 4 1/4 lengths behind him. Despite the loss, Red Route One’s performance in the San Felipe Stakes showed that he has the speed, stamina, and heart to compete with the best three-year-olds in the country.

Chances of Winning:

Red Route One is currently one of the top contenders for the 2023 Preakness Stakes, with odds of 6-1 to win the race. His pedigree, trained by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, and his early success on the racetrack, make him a formidable opponent. However, he will face stiff competition from other talented horses, such as Kentucky Derby winner Super Stock, Belmont Stakes winner Essential Quality, and Life Is Good, who is expected to return to racing after recovering from a minor injury. Red Route One’s running style of going to the front and trying to maintain his position might make the race more difficult for him, but he has shown the ability to adapt to different situations.
