2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Best Longshot Odds, Picks & Predictions

With last week’s Travelers Championship in the rear-view mirror, we now look forward to this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Michigan. The North Course at Detroit Golf Club will host this event, which it has done annually since the tournament’s inception in 2019.

Detroit Golf Club is a par-72, 7,370-yard track designed by Donald Ross that benefits strong ball strikers and those who can handle Poa Annua greens. Looking at the top of previous leaderboards, the greatest predictors of success at this course are strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained off the tee.

Below, I will give out my two best longshot bets to win the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Best Longshot Bets

These plays are 0.3u and 0.15u, or 0.3% and 0.15% of your betting bankroll.

Sepp Straka (+7500 via BetRivers): 0.3u

The first golfer we are targeting this week is Sepp Straka, who currently sits at 75/1 via BetRivers. Fresh off his T38 finish at last week’s Travelers Championship, Straka has now made four of his past five cuts with two T20 finishes over that span, including his T7 performance at the PGA Championship.

Oak Hill hosted this year’s PGA Championship, which is another Ross design. That marked Straka’s second-straight T7 finish at a Ross design, with the first concluding the 2021-22 TOUR season at East Lake Golf Club last August.

A strong ball striker, Straka ranks 52nd on TOUR this season in strokes gained tee to green. Once on the greens, he should have no issue on these difficult-putting surfaces.

Straka gained +0.85 strokes putting at this year’s The Genesis Invitational, a tournament that also featured Poa Annua greens. Finally, he boasts two T15 finishes in four appearances at this tournament.

Byeong Hun An (+8000 via FanDuel): 0.15u

Another golfer to target this week is Byeong Hun An, who currently sits at 80/1 via FanDuel. Hun An has been a constantly overlooked staple on TOUR this season, making 18 of his 24 cuts with nine T25 finishes, which is why he currently ranks 55th in the FedEx Cup Standings.

A tremendous ball striker, Hun An sits inside the Top 35 on TOUR in both strokes gained off the tee and strokes gained tee to green. Once on the greens, he should have no issue on these difficult-putting surfaces.

Hun An gained +0.34 strokes putting at this year’s Fortinet Championship en route to a T4 finish, a tournament that also featured Poa Annua greens. Finally, he finished in 13th place at this tournament’s debut in 2019.

Best of luck!
