With the Sentry Tournament of Champions in the rearview mirror, we now look forward to this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii. The Waialae Country Club will host this tournament once again, which it has done since the tournament’s inception in 1965.

Waialae is a par-70, 7,044-yard track that benefits those who can get off the greens quickly. Looking at the top of previous leaderboards, the metric that predicts the most success at this course is SG: Putting.

2023 Hawaii Open in Hawaii: Best Longshot Picks & Predictions

Cam Davis (+4000): 0.25u

The first golfer we are targeting this week is Cam Davis, who sits at 40/1. Entering this week in strong form, Davis has made each of his last three cuts.

Out of those three made cuts, he boasts two T30 finishes, including his T13 finish at THE CJ CUP in South Carolina. Davis’ putter is the primary reason for this recent run, ranking 42nd on TOUR this season in SG: Putting.

This strong putting is not an outlier based on a smaller sample size either. A strong putter, Davis also finished inside the top 85 on TOUR last season in SG: Putting.

His excellent form should continue into this week at Waialae, a track that Davis has fared well at previously. Davis has now made each of his last three cuts at this tournament, including a ninth-place finish in 2020.

Given his recent form, putting success this season, and track record at Waialae, Davis is an excellent play to make at 40/1.

Maverick McNealy (+3500): 0.25u

Another golfer we are targeting this week is Maverick McNealy, whose strong putting should keep him toward the top of the leaderboard all week. On TOUR this season, he ranks fourth in SG: Putting.

This high ranking is not out of the ordinary for this fantastic putter, who finished last season ranked 19th on TOUR in SG: Putting. McNealy’s strong putting has led to a terrific start to the 22-23 season, making each of his last five cuts.

More impressively, McNealy has finished inside the top 30 in all five of those tournaments. This strong play should continue at Waialae, where he finished 27th last year in his lone career appearance at this course.

Given McNealy’s recent success due to his dynamite putting, his odds are too long for this tournament at 35/1.

Other Outright Winner Plays:

  • Billy Horschel (+2800): 0.4u
  • J.J. Spaun (+4000): 0.1u

Best of luck!
