2023 Tour Championship Odds & Picks: Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Matt Fitzpatrick

The 2022-2023 PGA Tour season will come to a dramatic conclusion this week with the Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

There's a great deal at stake for the 30 players who qualified for this event by making it through the first three tournaments of the four-week FedEx Cup Playoffs. The winner of the Tour Championship will receive $18 million and a five-year PGA Tour exemption. Second place is worth $6.5 million. Every player in the field will earn at least $500,000 for making it this far, along with a two-year PGA Tour exemption and a 2024 Masters invitation.

The Tour Championship uses a unique “starting strokes” system that rewards players based on the number of FedEx Cup points they’ve accumulated throughout the season. The FedEx Cup points leader starts at -10. The No. 2 player starts at -8, the No. 3 player starts at -7, the No. 4 player starts at -6, and the No. 5 player starts at -5. The rest of the field is sorted into groups of five, with groups starting at -4, -3, -2, -1 and even par. Bear in mind that betting odds for the Tour Championship take the starting strokes system into account.

The field features betting favorite Scottie Scheffler, reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm and defending FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy. Will one of the big names claim the title, or will we see a less heralded but red-hot player such as Lucas Glover or Brian Harman win at East Lake?

Let's look at the betting outlook for a few of the players who'll be competing in this week's Tour Championship.

Max Homa 2023 Tour Championship Betting Outlook

When looking for a longshot winner this week who can overcome a large starting deficit, look no further than a red-hot golfer who can go low. Max Homa is that guy. He begins at 4-under, six strokes behind Scheffler. Homa’s accuracy and precision from tee to green were stellar at the BMW last week. Olympia Fields is a souped-up version of East Lake, so the correlation is there for Homa to continue his torrid play to finish the season.

2023 Tour Championship Betting Advice

Take some shots on Homa to scream all the way to the top at 35-1, but the smarter bet is to take the easier money on a top-5 finish.

Matt Fitzpatrick 2023 Tour Championship Betting Outlook

The summer did not go as smoothly for Matt Fitzpatrick as he would have liked, but perhaps the tide is turning at the right time after he finished runner-up at last week's BMW Championship with an impressive 15-under performance. When his game is on, Fitzpatrick is one of the best golfers in the world, evidenced by his T10 finish at the Masters and subsequent win at the following week's RBC Heritage. If anyone can replicate Rory McIlroy's six-stroke comeback at last year's Tour Championship, perhaps it is Fitzpatrick, a guy who finished last week with a tremendous 4.29 total true strokes gained.

2023 Tour Championship Betting Advice

I will be making a play on Fitzpatrick outright at 55/1 via FanDuel. He was brilliant last week at Olympia Fields, and while a six-stroke differential is a tall task, McIlroy proved last year it is doable.

Xander Schauffele 2023 Tour Championship Betting Outlook

Xander Schauffele has been a model of consistency at East Lake. In six appearances, the California native has finished no worse than T7. While he has yet to win in 2023, Schauffele has 10 top-10 finishes and is coming off a T8 at the BMW Championship. The ninth-year pro has some work to do, starting seven shots back, but at this number he’s worth considering.

2023 Tour Championship Betting Advice

If anyone is going to come from this far back to win the tournament, Schauffele is probably the most likely to pull it off, so feel free to add him to your card with confidence.
