2023 U.S. Open: Best Outright Winner Picks & Predictions

The U.S. Open comes to the Los Angeles Country Club this week for the first time ever, and to the city of Los Angeles for the first time since 1948, when Ben Hogan won at Riviera.

A fascinating and unfamiliar venue should make for an entertaining tournament. Los Angeles Country Club's north course features five par-3s, and two of them are monsters. The 11th hole measures 290 yards, though it will play shorter since it's downhill. The 7th plays at 284 yards. Then there's the tiny 15th, which is listed at 124 yards. It could play even shorter if the pin is in front, but it's a harrowing tee shot to a small, well-guarded green. Another hole that promises high entertainment value is the 6th, a reachable 330-yard par-4 with a blind tee shot over a tree.

LACC has wider fairways than a typical U.S. Open venue, but course management will be of the essence, as having the proper angle of attack on approach shots is critical. The course figures to play firm and fast, and its undulating greens will present a stern test.

Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite, followed closely by reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm. Not far behind is Brooks Koepka, who won the PGA last month and leads the contingent of players from the LIV Tour.

And speaking of LIV, this will be the first major since the bombshell announcement of a planned merger between the LIV and PGA tours. The deal is a controversial one, and with a blended field of PGA Tour and LIV Tour players, merger talk will add to the intrigue of the event.

The 123rd U.S. Open should be a fun ride. Buckle up.

Top Outright Winner Bets

Here are our top outright winner picks for the 2023 U.S. Open.

Scottie Scheffler

If not for some of the most ghastly putting of his career, this latest stretch of ball-striking from Scheffler would have resulted in a continuance of his dominance over the last two years. If Scottie is going to win the U.S. Open, he will need to see some putts go down early. LACC is primed to be an unforgiving place for someone struggling as mightily with the flatstick as Scheffler is. It might be wiser to bet him live if his extremely short odds take a tumble early on.

Despite the short odds, Scheffler is still the No. 1 golfer in the world for a reason and as good of an outright bet as anyone in the field.

Best odds to win: +750 (FanDuel)

Patrick Cantlay

Patrick Cantlay has not earned an outright win this season, but he's been close on numerous occasions. The 31-year-old Californian will be comfortable playing at Los Angeles Country Club, as he attended UCLA for his collegiate career, plus he's grabbed seven top-10 finishes this season. Cantlay is no stranger to big wins, securing six outrights between 2021 and 2022 while ranking first in total driving and fifth in total strokes gained. Taking Cantlay's outright odds at 17-1 (FanDuel) is a strong bet to place ahead of Thursday's opening round.

Confidently bet on Cantlay's +1700 odds, or bet on the top-10 finish market, where Cantlay is +150 (DraftKings) after coming close with consecutive T14 finishes at the 2021 and 2022 U.S. Open.

Best odds to win: +1700 (FanDuel)

Jordan Spieth

The roller-coaster ride that is Jordan Spieth is nothing short of entertaining. Although he has yet to win this season, the close calls have been frequent enough to catch glimpses that Spieth’s game from yesteryear is back. LACC sets up perfectly for his chaotic, scrambling and rambling style. The Memorial is a great comp for this week and Spieth finished in the top 5 there two weeks ago despite his inability to find fairways off the tee. Make no mistake, this year’s U.S. Open will be more about scrambling more than bombing and gouging.

Believe it or not, Spieth is an incredible value this week at 28-1 to win outright. He also pays out +240 for top 10 and +500 for top 5, which is much softer than expected.

Best odds to win: +2800 (FanDuel)

Justin Rose

Rose already has a win in California at the AT&T Pebble Beach this year, and a T6 and T16 in the first two majors of the season. The 42 year-old Englishman always seems to be in contention when the stakes are the highest. He will be someone I have as a core play this week.

Consider all options for Rose, including winning at +5500 or a top-10 finish at +320.

Best odds to win: +5500 (Caesars)

Jon Rahm

There’s not much Jon Rahm can’t do on a golf course. In 14 starts this season, the Spaniard has 10 top-25 finishes and four wins, including his first green jacket at Augusta in April. The 28-year-old already has one U.S. Open title to his credit, a one-shot victory over Louis Oosthuizen in 2021. The tournament returns to Southern California this year, as The Los Angeles Country Club will play host to the championship. Backing Rahm is a smart decision.

Find Rahm’s name, fire at will at +1100 to win, and feel free to mix him in any type of parlay to finish top 5.

Best odds to win: +1100 (FanDuel)
