Course Preview: TPC Scottsdale

TPC Scottsdale is a 7,261-yard, par-71 course with Bermudagrass greens that tend to be more of a blend than pure Bermuda. As we see on most desert courses, the greens will be hard and fast, making putting even more critical than most weeks.

While distance off the tee isn’t mandatory to win, when dialed in accuracy-wise, it can be a huge asset for players. Bunker play will also surely come into play for the winner, as the course is littered with fairway and greenside traps.

Outright Betting Pick: Hideki Matsuyama (+3000

Since he hasn’t been consistent in recent years, his odds have been quite alluring each week, but TPC Scottsdale is the track where the allure should be at its greatest.

Matsuyama has dominated the course his entire professional career. He has two victories in the competition (in 2016 and 2017), along with a second (2015), fourth (2014), and eighth (2022). In terms of performance, TPC Scottsdale is, without a doubt, Matsuyama’s preferred course.

In addition to the previous performance, Matsuyama is shown some very strong indications of regaining his best form. He gained 4.9 strokes on the approach at the Sony Open this year, and in his subsequent start at the Farmers Insurance Open, he placed seventh. Matsuyama slipped a little bit down the leaderboard at Torrey Pines because he had to play aggressively and hit a lot of pins down the stretch to try to win, but he was still competitive for the majority of his Sunday round.
