With the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in the rearview mirror, it’s time for the 2024 Belmont Stakes. The final jewel of the triple crown, the Test of the Champion is typically the longest of the three races at a full 1.5 miles. However, the 2024 version of the Belmont States will run at the historic Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., rather than Belmont Park, as renovations are underway at the race's usual home. That means the distance is being shortened from 1.5 miles to 1.25 miles due to the difference in track circumference. Protective Belmont Stakes Predictions

Out of the three Todd Pletcher-trained horses in this race, Protective is the one generating the least buzz. And the lack of attention is relatively understandable, although it does raise my eyebrows a bit. This is horse racing after all. In four starts, Protective’s best finish came in July 2023 when he finished second in his debut at in a six furlong race at Saratoga.
He’s got a pair of third place finishes this season with his speed figures increasing in both instances. However, Protective hasn’t been tested at this length of 1 1/4 miles. Protective has a respectable trainer/jockey combo, but this length and field may be too much for him.
