The final jewel of the triple crown, the Test of the Champion is typically the longest of the three races at a full 1.5 miles. However, the 2024 version of the Belmont States will run at the historic Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., rather than Belmont Park, as renovations are underway at the race's usual home. That means the distance is being shortened from 1.5 miles to 1.25 miles due to the difference in track circumference. Sierra Leone Belmont Stakes Predictions

This year’s Belmont Stakes is not only at a shorter distance at Saratoga, it’s also expected to have some early pace. This favors closers like Sierra Leone who can use that finishing speed to take advantage of the pace-setters wearing down toward the stretch. This was the same case in the Kentucky Derby, a race in which Sierra Leone finished second. Sierra Leone also gets a jockey upgrade, as Flavien Prat will take the mount atop the 9 horse, replacing Tyler Gaffalione. The key will be whether Prat can steer Sierra Leone straighter down the stretch, as the horse’s tendency to sway across lanes cost him the Derby. If Prat can straighten things out — literally — then there’s plenty of reason to believe in Sierra Leone as a factor down the stretch.
