2024 British Open Odds & Picks: Hideki Matsuyama
The final major of the 2024 golf season begins Thursday in South Ayrshire, Scotland, home of Royal Troon, a true jewel of the British Open course rotation.
Troon is one of the greatest links courses in the world. Golf's top players will have to navigate dunes, pot bunkers, and, of course, the elements. Most days on the west coast of Scotland include rainy spells, and sometimes, the wind gusts in from the Firth of Clyde, driving up scores. The back nine at Troon can be especially punishing, with some of the courseâs longest holes playing into a prevailing wind.
The British Open is often referred to as "The Open Championship," and the winner earns the title Champion Golfer of the Year. That honor currently belongs to Brian Harman, who won at Royal Liverpool this year. The favorite this year, however, is Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, who has enjoyed a splendid season. Other top contenders include Rory McIlroy, who's gone 10 years without a victory in a major, Xander Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship in May, and Bryson DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open last month.
Who'll win the Claret Jug this year, and how should you bet the British Open? Let's take a look at some of the top contenders and assess their chances.

Hideki Matsuyama British Open Course History
This will be the 10th Open Championship appearance for Matsuyama and his second at Royal Troon. The Japanese star is hoping the second time at Troon is a charm, as he missed the cut there in 2016. He wasnât particularly close to playing into the weekend, either, finishing with an 8-over 150. He has had mixed results at The Open over the years, finishing 18th or better four times, making the in six of his past nine Open Championships while heading home early three times.
Hideki Matsuyama Recent Form
Matsuyama has generally performed well this season, making the cut in 14 of his past 15 events, although that missed cut happened last week in the tune-up event for the Open Championship, the Scottish Open. Thatâs a little concerning. However, Matsuyama has managed finishes of 23rd or better in three of his past four events, including a pair of top-10 showings.
Hideki Matsuyama 2024 British Open Betting Outlook
Matsuyama had been steaming along quite nicely, finishing inside the top 12 in six of nine events from mid-February to late June before stubbing his toe in Scotland. He also had a win at the Genesis Invitational, and he has generally been effective. At these odds, he is worth a roll of the dice, and he is a solid value even as a top-20 finisher.
