2024 British Open Odds & Picks: Sam Burns

The final major of the 2024 golf season begins Thursday in South Ayrshire, Scotland, home of Royal Troon, a true jewel of the British Open course rotation.

Troon is one of the greatest links courses in the world. Golf’s top players will have to navigate dunes, pot bunkers, and, of course, the elements. Most days on the west coast of Scotland include rainy spells, and sometimes, the wind gusts in from the Firth of Clyde, driving up scores. The back nine at Troon can be especially punishing, with some of the course’s longest holes playing into a prevailing wind.

The British Open is often referred to as “The Open Championship,” and the winner earns the title Champion Golfer of the Year. That honor currently belongs to Brian Harman, who won at Royal Liverpool this year. The favorite this year, however, is Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, who has enjoyed a splendid season. Other top contenders include Rory McIlroy, who’s gone 10 years without a victory in a major, Xander Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship in May, and Bryson DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open last month.

Who’ll win the Claret Jug this year, and how should you bet the British Open? Let’s take a look at some of the top contenders and assess their chances.

Let’s take a closer look at our top 2024 British Open odds and picks for Sam Burns.

Sam Burns British Open Course History

This will be Sam Burns’ fourth time playing the British Open. He didn’t participate in 2016 when it was last held at Royal Troon. The American hasn’t performed well at the Open Championship throughout his career, with his best outing a 42nd-place finish at St. Andrews in 2022. He shot -6 over the four days at the Old Course (72-69-77-64). Actually, his struggles stretch beyond events held on foreign soil, as Burns has finished 21st or worse in 15 of his 17 starts in majors.

Sam Burns Recent Form

Burns had an excellent run to start 2024, collecting four top-10 finishes over a four-tournament span in January and February. Following a lull in the middle third of the season, the 27-year-old appears to be back on the upswing, posting three top-20 performances in his last four events.

Sam Burns 2024 British Open Betting Outlook

I won’t be backing Sam Burns to win the British Open this weekend. I’m torn on whether to take a stake in him in the top-20 market (+360 via FanDuel), but I’ll likely stay away. Burns has struggled in majors throughout his career, placing 20th or better in just two of his 17 majors played. Even though he has looked solid in recent tournaments, I’d like a little better track record in the big events. Sometimes the best bet is no bet, and I think that applies to Burns this weekend.
