2024 British Open Odds & Picks: Scottie Scheffler
The final major of the 2024 golf season begins Thursday in South Ayrshire, Scotland, home of Royal Troon, a true jewel of the British Open course rotation.
Troon is one of the greatest links courses in the world. Golf's top players will have to navigate dunes, pot bunkers, and, of course, the elements. Most days on the west coast of Scotland include rainy spells, and sometimes, the wind gusts in from the Firth of Clyde, driving up scores. The back nine at Troon can be especially punishing, with some of the courseâs longest holes playing into a prevailing wind.
The British Open is often referred to as "The Open Championship," and the winner earns the title Champion Golfer of the Year. That honor currently belongs to Brian Harman, who won at Royal Liverpool this year. The favorite this year, however, is Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, who has enjoyed a splendid season. Other top contenders include Rory McIlroy, who's gone 10 years without a victory in a major, Xander Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship in May, and Bryson DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open last month.
Who'll win the Claret Jug this year, and how should you bet the British Open? Let's take a look at some of the top contenders and assess their chances.

Scottie Scheffler British Open Course History
Scottie Scheffler was just breaking into the professional golf world when the Open Championship was last played at Royal Troon in 2016, so this will be his first tournament appearance at the Scottish course. The top-ranked golfer in the world has two major victories to his name, and neither of them have come at British Opens. In fact, both wins were at the Masters (2022, 2024). Scheffler has just three appearances at The Open, with his best outing coming in 2021 (eighth place). Most recently, in 2023 at Royal Liverpool, the 28-year-old shot even-par over four days (70-75-72-67), which was good for 23rd.
Scottie Scheffler Recent Form
Scheffler's playing the best golf of his life right now, and it almost feels like he expects to win the tournament every time he steps into the tee box on Thursday. He's racked up six wins in his last 10 outings, as well as adding second-place finishes at the Houston Open and Charles Schwab Challenge. It's safe to say Scheffler's in fantastic form at the moment, and he'll be fresh, as his last performance was a winning effort at the Travelers Championship late last month.
Scottie Scheffler 2024 British Open Betting Outlook
Scheffler's the most dominant golfer in the world right now, but I have to say, I'm hesitant to back him at 5-1 to win. I don't see much value at those odds, especially since he only has two major victories over 20 attempts. Instead, I think it's worth a shot to play him at +100 to finish in the top five (BetMGM). Scheffler has accomplished this in three of his last six majors and in eight of his last 10 tournaments overall.
