2024 British Open Odds & Picks: Shane Lowry

The final major of the 2024 golf season begins Thursday in South Ayrshire, Scotland, home of Royal Troon, a true jewel of the British Open course rotation.

Troon is one of the greatest links courses in the world. Golf’s top players will have to navigate dunes, pot bunkers, and, of course, the elements. Most days on the west coast of Scotland include rainy spells, and sometimes, the wind gusts in from the Firth of Clyde, driving up scores. The back nine at Troon can be especially punishing, with some of the course’s longest holes playing into a prevailing wind.

The British Open is often referred to as “The Open Championship,” and the winner earns the title Champion Golfer of the Year. That honor currently belongs to Brian Harman, who won at Royal Liverpool this year. The favorite this year, however, is Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, who has enjoyed a splendid season. Other top contenders include Rory McIlroy, who’s gone 10 years without a victory in a major, Xander Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship in May, and Bryson DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open last month.

Who’ll win the Claret Jug this year, and how should you bet the British Open? Let’s take a look at some of the top contenders and assess their chances.

Let’s take a closer look at our top 2024 British Open odds and picks for Shane Lowry.

Shane Lowry British Open Course History

Shane Lowry is one of the veteran players on the PGA Tour, so this will actually be his second professional appearance at Royal Troon. The 37-year-old played the 2016 British Open at the Scottish course, but it didn’t go well, as he shot +7 over two days (78-71) while missing the cut. Lowry has now missed the cut at five Open Championships, but he does have an outright victory at Royal Portrush in 2019, as well as a ninth-place finish at Royal Liverpool in 2014. It’s extremely hit-or-miss with Lowry at this event.

Shane Lowry Recent Form

The Irishman had a streak where he placed fourth and third at the Cognizant Classic and Arnold Palmer Invitational back in March, but that two-week span has been the highlight of the 2024 campaign for him. Following those top-five performances, Lowry only has two other top-10 finishes over the nine subsequent events. One of those top-10s was a ninth-place effort at the Travelers Championship in his last tournament, so he is entering the week on a relatively high note.

Shane Lowry 2024 British Open Betting Outlook

It’s going to be a pass for me on Lowry this weekend. I don’t put an overwhelming amount of stock in his poor 2016 effort at Royal Troon, but missing the cut certainly doesn’t have me running to the window to place a bet. Mostly, it’s his inconsistent play that makes me wary of taking a stake in the Irishman.
