The final major of the 2024 golf season begins Thursday in South Ayrshire, Scotland, home of Royal Troon, a true jewel of the British Open course rotation.

Troon is one of the greatest links courses in the world. Golf’s top players will have to navigate dunes, pot bunkers, and, of course, the elements. Most days on the west coast of Scotland include rainy spells, and sometimes, the wind gusts in from the Firth of Clyde, driving up scores. The back nine at Troon can be especially punishing, with some of the course’s longest holes playing into a prevailing wind.

That honor currently belongs to Brian Harman, who won at Royal Liverpool this year. The favorite this year, however, is Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, who has enjoyed a splendid season. Other top contenders include Rory McIlroy, who’s gone 10 years without a victory in a major, Xander Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship in May, and Bryson DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open last month.

Tony Finau British Open Course History

Tony Finau missed the cut at Royal Liverpool last year, snapping a streak of six consecutive cuts made at the Open Championship. That includes his best-ever Open finish at Royal Portrush in 2019. This will be his second go-around at Royal Troon. Finau posted a solid even-par 284 and T18 finish back in 2016. He caught fire in Round 1 in that year’s event, firing a 67 before tumbling down the leaderboard with a 3-over 74 in the final round.

Finau is a big bomber off the tee box, and it has been serving him well lately. He has finished 18th or higher in five consecutive events, including a T3 at Pinehurst in the U.S. Open and a T18 at Valhalla in the PGA Championship. Finau ranks third in strokes gained: approach to green, while checking in eighth in SG: total and sixth in SG: tee-to-green. His clubhead speed is tremendous and he generates so much power, yet he isn’t terribly reckless.
