2024 Charles Schwab Challenge: Odds, Picks & Predictions

The PGA Championship at Valhalla was Shakespearean. Or was it Orwellian? The best golfer in the world caught a case and still managed to finish top 10. Scottie Scheffler didn’t win this time around.

The new No. 2 golfer in the world rankings is Xander Schauffele, who never touched the brake pedal on Sunday to hold off Bryson DeChambeau and other stars of the game for his first Major title. Schauffele can’t close? Debunked. The Olympic gold medalist was stellar in wild scoring conditions at the softened stomping grounds in Louisville, Ky. Native son Justin Thomas saved us from the skunk with a T10 of his own. We’re on to Colonial.

2024 Charles Schwab Challenge: Odds, Picks & Predictions

(Odds Courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)

The Charles Schwab Challenge is a really fun event. Historic Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, doesn’t care about your ball speed. It beckons creativity and, most of all, precision to meander its measly 7,200 yards. Unbridled power is a huge negative on this oak-lined parkland course parched from the dry Texas zephyrs. To master Colonial, one must harness their bag and weave it through barrels.

Recent overhauls to the property should yield more favorable scoring than in years past. This is not to say birdies will be raining down like they were last week. It would be a shock for the winning score to be better than 15-under par. I’ll have a reverse-seared tomahawk steak, medium-rare. Let’s tee off.

Max Homa

Repeat after me: Don’t bet Scheffler until his odds slip past +500. At +280 or thereabouts on the books, it isn’t smart gambling. Scheffler might win this thing wire-to-wire, but that’s a hat tip. Max Homa is supremely accurate from tee to green and can score in tougher conditions. He’s also a much better putter on bentgrass than Scheffler and fellow favorite Collin Morikawa. We can thank Scheffler for one thing. The rest of these lines are crazy soft as a result of his presence.

Picks: Outright +1800 [1u]; Top-5 +400 [1u]

Sepp Straka

The big Austrian ended a really torrid hot streak last week at Valhalla. The birdies weren’t falling, a far departure from four top-20 finishes in the five events prior. Sepp Straka is excellent off the tee and on approach. If he can keep piling up the opportunities, the Georgia Bulldog will be suited nicely for Colonial.

Picks: Outright +4000 [0.5u]; Top-10 +400 [0.5u]

Tom Kim

Tom “the Tank Engine” Kim is starting to rumble down the tracks again. He trundled into a 26th-place finish at the PGA Championship, carding 19 birdies. One of the strongest comp courses to Colonial is Sedgefield Country Club, the site of Kim’s first PGA Tour victory. He has yet to play Colonial, but Kim is a Texas native and fits this course like a glove. He is a leap of faith on my card.

Picks: Outright +4500 [0.5u]; Top-10 +450 [0.5u]

Akshay Bhatia

It might be a tall ask, but if Akshay Bhatia can get off the tee without much consequence, he could run away with this tournament. His victory at the Barracuda Championship last year came at a tight, tree-lined course like Colonial. When he took down Denny McCarthy at the Valero Texas Open this season, his short iron approach was otherworldly. Those traits vibe extremely well at Colonial despite the field here being much stronger by comparison. I might have too much confidence in the prodigy’s chances, but it’s my prerogative.

Picks: Outright +5000 [0.5u]; Top-10 +450 [0.5u]

Deep Shot: Ben Kohles

I was one of the earliest believers in Ben Kohles, only to watch as he came into his own this season without my full-fledged endorsement – enough of that. Kohles is exactly the type of player who can far outplay his lengthy 180-1 odds. Throw a few bucks on him and get aggressive with T20 and T30 lines at +450 and +260, respectively.
