2024 College World Series Picks: Wednesday (Tennessee vs. Florida State)

Because the Kentucky-Florida Elimination Game was postponed yesterday, today’s College World Series slate includes three games.

Kentucky and Florida will play their Elimination Game at 11:00 am. ET and the winner will face Texas A&M at 7:00 tonight.

We can’t predict the A&M game until we know which team will face Texas A&M. However, the Aggies are in a much better position tonight. Texas A&M will have the rest and pitching availability that Kentucky or Florida likely won’t have.

Let’s focus on the Tennessee-Florida State game at 3:00 pm ET. I’ve provided my best bet below. However, keep in mind that Florida State has not announced a starter at the time of writing this article.

Tennessee (-195) vs. Florida State (+150)

  • Pitching Matchup
  • Tennessee: SP - Zander Sechrist (4-1) | 3.26 ERA
  • Florida State: SP - UNDECIDED

The Tennessee Volunteers have elected to pitch Zander Schrist for today’s game against the Seminoles. Sechrist has had success recently, including three quality starts in his last four outings. To clinch a spot in the College World Series, Sechrist went 6.1 innings and struck out six without allowing a run. He also didn’t walk anyone and allowed six hits.

He also added a quality start against South Carolina to close out the regular season. That helped Tennessee clinch a share of the SEC regular season title.

In addition, the left-hander held Vanderbilt to two runs on four hits in six innings in the SEC Tournament semifinals. Again and again, Sechrist has shown up in the big spot for the Vols.

Furthermore, Tennessee will have relievers Nate Snead and Kirby Connell available. Neither has thrown 30 pitches in the outing.

On the other hand, Florida State hasn’t announced a starter. It’s one of the reasons why only the moneyline is available right now. While Florida State would love to have Jamie Arnold on the mound, the more likely candidate will be Conner Whittaker. He’s the last player to start other than Arnold or Carson Dorsey.

Whittaker has a 4.94 ERA in 15 games this season. He’s also allowed a 1.12 WHIP but is 5-0 on the year in 58.1 innings pitched. While both offenses are elite, Tennessee has the advantage in the starter department.

Pick: Tennessee (-195)
