2023 Kentucky Derby Predictions: Catching Freedom

Catching Freedom winning Smarty Jones on New Yearâ€™s Day doesnâ€™t entirely explain just how impressive of a run it was. The horse was boxed in early and coming around the final turn had to swing way outside just to get a clear path to the finish line. Chasing down horses like Just Steel and Mystik Dan, Catching Freedom had plenty left to pull of the win. More relevant, however, may be Catching Freedomâ€™s third-place finish at the 2024 Risen Star, a race won by Sierra Leone.

Though Sierra Leone got the win that day, the two horses were neck-and-neck down the home stretch. And after that race, Catching Freedom won the 1 3/16 mile Louisiana Derby at the end of March. With that long race under his belt, he has an advantage when it comes to race length over the rest of the field. Definitely use this horse in exotics, and do not be surprised if he wins.
