2023 Kentucky Derby Predictions: Fierceness

  • Post Position: 17
  • Odds: 5-2

Fierceness combines recent success with a trainer-jockey combination that’s taken care of business in the Run for the Roses. Fierceness has three wins in five starts, but it’s his most recent performance in the Florida Derby that has me immensely interested. Just watch the race to see Fierceness fire out of the gates and gradually widen the gap between his competitors, which included two horses in Saturday’s field. Fierceness arguably has the most upside in this field. But his team couldn’t have been thrilled to draw the dreaded 17th post position, the only post that’s never had a Kentucky Derby winner. History aside, Fierceness is a horse that prefers to run upfront early, something that could be harder to achieve from the far outside.

The good news is Fierceness has a great team backing him in trainer Todd Pletcher, who has two Derby wins, as well as jockey John Velasquez, who has won three times in 25 appearances at Churchill Downs. Fierceness has the talent to win this race. The question is whether he’s good enough to overcome the less than ideal circumstances in front of him.
