2023 Kentucky Derby Predictions: Domestic Product

  • Post Position: 15
  • Odds: 30-1

Domestic Product enters the Kentucky Derby after winning the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby on March 9 and two wins in five starts. While that win was an impressive feather in the horse’s cap, it was also its most recent race. That means Domestic Product will look to break a trend with more than 100 years of history behind it: no horse since 1922 has won the Derby after more than a seven-week layoff.

By the time Domestic Product enters the post 15 at Churchill Downs, it will have been eight weeks since he last ran. It doesn’t help that trainer Chad Brown and jockey Irad Ortiz are both 0-for-7 in the Derby. Domestic Product’s long layoff combined with inconsistent speed figures makes it a horse I’m avoiding.

Bet: Toss, Use in Back End of Exotics

2023 Kentucky Derby Predictions: Grand Mo the First

  • Post Position: 16
  • Odds: 50-1

There are so many things working against Grand Mo the First. First, jockey Emisael Jaramillo is inexperienced in the Kentucky Derby. He has jockeyed just one previous Kentucky Derby, and it came all the way back in 2016 when he finished 18th. Second, Grand Mo the First has never won a race on any surface other than synthetic. And finally, against the Derby field, he’s performed very poorly, losing to Fierceness, Catalytic, Domestic Product, and Endlessly.

Without any signs of improvement over his last few races, this is a long-shot only worth putting in the back-end of exotics to boost the price.

Bet: Toss, Use in Back End of Exotics
