2023 Kentucky Derby Predictions: Sierra Leone

Post Position: 2
Odds: 3-1

Sierra Leone has run four races, winning three and finishing second in the other. Most recently, Tyler Gaffalione led the horse to a win at the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (Gr. 1). The horse was in last place halfway through the race, then navigated traffic and had plenty left down the home stretch. The biggest concern is Gaffalione letting the leaders get too far ahead and not giving the horse enough time to catch up. But there is no question that Sierra Leone has the stamina and the experience to win this race. His overall success will simply come down to execution.
