2024 PGA Championship Odds & Picks: Dustin Johnson

Golf’s biggest stars descend on Louisville, Kentucky, this week for the second major of the year, the 2024 PGA Championship, which will be played at Valhalla Golf Club.

This will be the fourth PGA Championship to be played at Valhalla, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course that opened in 1986. Mark Brooks won the first PGA at Valhalla in 1996. Tiger Woods outlasted Bob May in a memorable Valhalla duel to win the 2000 PGA Championship. And Rory McIlroy won the PGA here in 2014, edging Phil Mickelson by a stroke.

Brooks Koepka is the defending PGA Championship winner. He won by two strokes over Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler last year at Oak Hill. But Scheffler is the headliner this week. The No. 1 player in the world has been on fire this year, winning four of his last five events. Last month, Scheffler won the first major of 2024, The Masters, earning his second Green Jacket.

Course History

Dustin Johnson had consecutive runner-up finishes at the PGA Championship in 2019 and 2020, but he hasn’t had much success at this major of late, with a 55th and a pair of missed cuts in his last three PGAs. This will be Dustin Johnson’s first appearance at Valhalla Golf Club.

Dustin Johnson Recent Form

Johnson didn’t have a good showing at Augusta in mid-April, missing the cut after shooting +13 through two days. However, he has been productive on the LIV Tour, especially this past weekend, where he secured a seventh-place finish in Singapore. The two-time major winner won the LIV Golf Las Vegas event in February, marking his second outright win over the last 365 days (LIV Tulsa, May 2023). It’s also worth noting that DJ is ninth in greens in regulation (73.28%) this year, which is a decent metric to reference for overall form.

Dustin Johnson 2024 PGA Championship Betting Outlook

I don’t think this is breaking news, but there’s a chance that Dustin Johnson is officially past his prime. I won’t be locking in Johnson in any longshot markets (i.e., outright winner, top-5) at this year’s PGA Championship. The 39-year-old’s last five major finishes are MC, MC, 10, 55 and 48, so he’s been failing to show up on the big stage. Sometimes, the best bet is simply not making one, and that’s how I’m approaching Johnson this weekend.
