2024 PGA Championship Odds & Picks: Hideki Matsuyama

Golf’s biggest stars descend on Louisville, Kentucky, this week for the second major of the year, the 2024 PGA Championship, which will be played at Valhalla Golf Club.

This will be the fourth PGA Championship to be played at Valhalla, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course that opened in 1986. Mark Brooks won the first PGA at Valhalla in 1996. Tiger Woods outlasted Bob May in a memorable Valhalla duel to win the 2000 PGA Championship. And Rory McIlroy won the PGA here in 2014, edging Phil Mickelson by a stroke.

Brooks Koepka is the defending PGA Championship winner. He won by two strokes over Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler last year at Oak Hill. But Scheffler is the headliner this week. The No. 1 player in the world has been on fire this year, winning four of his last five events. Last month, Scheffler won the first major of 2024, The Masters, earning his second Green Jacket.

Course History

Hideki Matsuyama’s best finish in a PGA Championship was a tie for fourth at Baltusrol in 2016. He’s failed to crack the top 20 in his last four PGAs. Roughly a quarter of this weekend’s field played Valhalla back in 2014, and Hideki Matsuyama is one of those players. The then-22-year-old finished 35th (-3), shooting 71-72-70-68 over the four days.

Hideki Matsuyama Recent Form

This week’s PGA Championship will be Matsuyama’s first action since playing The Masters last month, where he secured a 38th-place finish (+7). The Japanese-born golfer had been playing well prior, logging consecutive top-10 finishes at the Players Championship (sixth) and Valero Texas Open (seventh). Matsuyama does have a win this year, which came in the Genesis Invitational back in February.

Hideki Matsuyama 2024 PGA Championship Betting Outlook

While Matsuyama has a history at Valhalla, it was far from his most successful event ever played. I’m certainly not rushing to the window to make any bets on the 32-year-old this weekend. He hasn’t played in a month, and he also hasn’t logged a top-20 finish at the PGA Championship since 2019. Matsuyama is a pass for me this weekend.
