Golf’s biggest stars descend on Louisville, Kentucky, this week for the second major of the year, the 2024 PGA Championship, which will be played at Valhalla Golf Club.

This will be the fourth PGA Championship to be played at Valhalla, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course that opened in 1986. Mark Brooks won the first PGA at Valhalla in 1996. Tiger Woods outlasted Bob May in a memorable Valhalla duel to win the 2000 PGA Championship. And Rory McIlroy won the PGA here in 2014, edging Phil Mickelson by a stroke.

Brooks Koepka is the defending PGA Championship winner. He won by two strokes over Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler last year at Oak Hill. But Scheffler is the headliner this week. The No. 1 player in the world has been on fire this year, winning four of his last five events. Last month, Scheffler won the first major of 2024, The Masters, earning his second Green Jacket.

Last year’s PGA Championship was played at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., a layout similar to Valhalla. Viktor Hovland fared well, finishing just two shots back of winner Brooks Koepka and even with Scottie Scheffler. Hovland has the game to be in the mix on Sunday in Louisville.

This is where things get dicey. The reigning FedEx Cup champion has not had a good year. In six starts, Hovland has just two top-25 finishes and none better than a T19 at The Genesis Invitational. The Norway native hasn’t teed it up in competition since last month’s Masters, so maybe the time off gave him a chance to get his game into the form we saw a year ago.
