2024 Tour Championship Odds & Picks: Hideki Matsuyama

The PGA Tour season comes to an end this week with the Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

It's the final event of the three-event FedEx Cup Playoffs. At stake: the honor of being the FedEx Cup champion and a whole lot of money. The winner of the Tour Championship receives $25 million and a five-year PGA Tour exemption. Second place is worth $12.5 million. Every player in the 30-man field will earn at least $550,000.

The Tour Championship uses a unique "starting strokes" system that rewards players based on the number of FedEx Cup points accumulated so far this season. FedEx Cup points leader Scottie Scheffler will start at -10. No. 2 player Xander Schauffele starts at -8, No. 3 Hideki Matsuyama starts at -7, No. 4 Keegan Bradley starts at -6, and No. 5 Ludvig Aberg starts at -5. The rest of the field is sorted into groups of five, with groups starting at -4, -3, -2, -1 and even par. Bear in mind that betting odds for the Tour Championship take the starting strokes system into account.

Let's take a closer look at our top 2024 Tour Championship odds and picks for Hideki Matsuyama.

Hideki Matsuyama Tour Championship Course History

Hideki Matsuyama, who's now 32 years old, is no stranger to playing at the East Lake Golf Club. The Atlanta course has hosted the tournament since 2004, and Matsuyama has competed in the event nine times. His best finish came in 2018 when he placed fourth at -6 (72-66-71-65). The Japanese-born golfer also had a fifth-place finish in 2016, shooting -6 that year as well (66-71-68-69). Matsuyama will start this weekend's Tour Championship at -7, where he trails only Scottie Scheffler (-10) and Xander Schauffele (-8).

Hideki Matsuyama Recent Form

Things have been extremely hit-or-miss for Matsuyama recently. He withdrew from the BMW Championship this past weekend but notched a win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship the week prior. The victory netted Matsuyama a cool $3.6 million payout. It's also worth noting that Matsuyama collected a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics earlier in August. Overall, it's been a successful campaign for Matsuyama, who has an additional win at the Genesis Invitational as well as four more top-10 performances.

Hideki Matsuyama 2024 Tour Championship Betting Outlook

Well, it looks like Scheffler and Schauffele are competing in a two-horse race this weekend. Matsuyama is the next-closest from an odds (and starting score) perspective, coming in at +1100. To be frank, this feels like it’s Scheffler's tournament to lose, so I don't even think a +1100 payout is very enticing for Matsuyama. I'll pass on betting on him outright, but I may circle back in the prop markets. There's no denying that the 32-year-old has found success at the course in the past, and he's in solid form.
