2024 US Open Odds & Picks: Women’s Best Bets

The Women’s Draw of the US Open recently has been a pathway for first-time Grand Slam winners. Since Serena Williams dominated en route to a US Open three-peat from 2012-14, six women (Flavia Pennetta, Sloane Stephens, Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu, Emma Raducanu, and Coco Gauff) have won their first Grand Slams at the US Open. And of those six, Osaka is the only player to have won another major since then.

This year’s odds suggest that there is a huge dropoff after the top two players (Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek), but will we get another first-time Grand Slam champion, or at least first-time US Open champion this year?

Read on for our top three picks for the 2024 Women’s US Open winner.

Top 2024 US Open Winners Picks: Women

Aryna Sabalenka (+250)

Sabalenka would fit the narrative of a first-time US Open winner, though it would be far from a surprise for her to take home the trophy, as she has reached the semifinals or better in her last three US Open appearances. Sabalenka was starting to become somewhat of an afterthought (as much as one can be anyway as the No. 2-ranked player in the world) since she had gone a long time without winning a single tournament after defending her Australian Open titles in the year’s first major. However, her drought was not all ultimately a result of poor play, as she withdrew from Wimbledon with a shoulder injury and did not complete in the Olympic Games in Paris citing a concern over the surface adaptation.

Any doubts over Sabalenka’s fitness were squashed in her dominant run to the Cincinnati title last week. Sabalenka always seemingly plays well on the hard courts in Cincinnati, as she had made three semifinals there before. But her dominant five-match run in which she did not drop a set this year was particularly eye-popping, considering she beat four top-30 opponents, including World No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

The faster the courts are playing, the more it favors the big-hitting Sabalenka, and she is a deserving favorite this week.

2024 US Open Odds & Picks: Men’s Best Bets

While the Australian Open has been dominated by Novak Djokovic (four of the last six titles) and Rafael Nadal won five of the previous eight French Open titles, the US Open has been the more “wide open” of the four majors on the Men’s side, at least recently. While Djokovic and Nadal have combined for five US Open titles since 2014, the last major of the season has also been won by Marin Cilic, Dominic Thiem, and Daniil Medvedev (which remains each of these three players’ lone major titles to this point). In addition, the US Open is where Carlos Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title in 2022, and Stan Wawrinka won in 2016, cashing massive +3300 pre-tournament odds.

Are we inevitably in for another Djokovic-Alcaraz final, as we have been treated to at the Olympics and at Wimbledon this year, or can another player lower on the odds board make a surprising run this year?

Top 2024 US Open Winners Picks: Men

Novak Djokovic (+240)

I believe it is imperative to have some exposure to either Carlos Alcaraz or Novak Djokovic if you are putting together a portfolio of Men’s US Open picks, and give the two players’ draws and head-to-head results, the smart money is on Djokovic.

Djokovic has won three of the last four meetings with Alcaraz, two of which were on hard courts in Cincinnati and at the Nitto ATP Finals in 2023. It is also hard to trust Alcaraz given that he admittedly played “the worst match of [his] career” against Gael Monfils last week.

Djokovic comes into New York not having won one of the last three Slams for the first time in 14 years, as the last year he did not win any of the four majors was in 2010. However, he did make the US Open final that year, and the fact that his draw has him avoiding both Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner until the final gives his chances a significant boost.
