Bryson DeChambeau 2023 British Open Odds, Picks & Predictions

It’s homecoming week for Rory McIlroy at the British Open.

Well, not exactly. McIlroy is a native of Northern Ireland and currently resides in Jupiter, Florida. This year's British Open (or "Open Championship," if you're a purist) is being held at Royal Liverpool (aka "Hoylake") in Wirral, England.

But McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug the last time the Open was held at Royal Liverpool, besting Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots in 2014, and he returns nine years later as the betting favorite.

Who could have imagined that Rory would go nine years without winning a major? He won both the Open and the PGA Championship in 2014 — his third and fourth major championships. He was only 25 at the time.

Can Rory end the majors drought at a course where he's tasted victory before? It won't be easy, as world No. 1-ranked player Scottie Scheffler, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm and 2023 PGA champ Brooks Koepka all have designs on the Jug.

Fans of true links golf and the creative shotmaking it requires should be excited about the Open Championship's return to Hoylake. The course will be firm and fast, and we'll see a lot of players landing their approach shots in front of the green and bouncing the ball onto the putting surface.

McIlroy posted a winning score of -17 in 2014. Tiger Woods finished at -18 when he won the Open at Hoylake in 2006. But if the wind howls, we could easily see a winning score in the neighborhood of -7 or -8.

The British Open champion is granted the title of Champion Golfer of the Year. Let's take a closer look at some of the players vying for that honor.

Bryson DeChambeau 2023 British Open Betting Outlook

Do not let his world ranking fool you, Bryson DeChambeau is one of the better golfers on the planet. Unfortunately, the OWGR committee is still figuring out how to properly allocate global points for LIV golfers, which is probably only going to get messier as the PGA/LIV merger commences over the next few seasons. With that said, he is one of my favorite plays on the board this week. This is not the DeChambeau-of-old, the guy who just relies on powerful drives. No, he has completely re-tooled his game since joining LIV and has become a much stronger all-around player, evidenced by three T10 finishes over his past four LIV tournaments.

Bryson DeChambeau 2023 British Open Betting Advice

Not only is DeChambeau excelling on LIV, but he has contended in each of the past three major championships. He posted a T4 finish at the PGA Championship, T20 finish at the U.S. Open and a T8 finish at last year’s British Open. Many see a links course with swirling winds that will require creativity and finesse over power and immediately discredit DeChambeau. But, as mentioned above, this is not the same golfer that we saw when he defected from the TOUR. DeChambeau is one of my favorite plays in the outright market this week, and I will be taking him at 66/1 via PointsBet.
