What are Team Futures?

Futures refers to any team-based wager for a future event or a result. These bets often do not pay out until weeks or even months from when they are originally placed. Bets for Win Totals and the Super Bowl winner are good examples of team futures bets.

Third-year coach Matt Rhule is the betting favorite to be the first HC fired this year. Even if Rhule survives the season, anything short of a playoff appearance and he is likely on his way out.

The looming QB competition between Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, while compelling, is uninspiring. Neither player is likely the future of the position for this franchise.

The Panthers have not been to the playoffs, nor had a winning record, since 2017.

I suppose there are worse ways to spend your money, but I struggle to think of any at this time. This team is not winning the Super Bowl. Pick a reason.

This outcome would certainly be less farfetched than Rhule hoisting the Lombardi, but it's not happening.

Carolina has lost its last four contests with Tampa Bay by an average margin of 21.75 points. It's tough to foresee a path to a division title for a team that has been so thoroughly handled by Tom Brady and the Bucs. Pass on betting the Panthers to win the NFC South.

The Panthers may face a relatively easy schedule out of the gate, and they are certainly capable of replicating their 3-0 start from a season ago.

If this were to occur, the in-season win total for Carolina would surely be higher, thus offering an interesting opportunity to hedge out of this bet for those who are risk-averse.

Further, the Panthers are more talented than the consensus opinion. And if newly-acquired Baker Mayfield resembles his 2020 self, this team will have a shot at a wildcard in a relatively weak NFC. However, that is a big if; and it is no certainty that Mayfield will be the Panthers’ starter.

The public is giving the Carolina staff too much credit in assuming Baker is going to supplant Sam Darnold as the starting quarterback.  There were times last season when HC Matt Rhule coddled QB Sam Darnold, and Rhule may still be reluctant to concede that his acquisition of the former New York Jet was a failed exercise. Additionally, new OC Ben McAdoo has (in the past) vocalized his doubts regarding Mayfield's outlook as a starting NFL quarterback.

In totality, any wager on Carolina's win total is, in my opinion, a risky one. But for those who are believers in Baker Mayfield, o6 wins (-125) is a good bet.

Different teams have different definitions of a successful season. In Year 3 of the Matt Rhule era, the only definition of success is a playoff berth.

This Panthers team is not so dissimilar to previously uninspiring 7 seeds (e.g. the 2020 Chicago Bears, helmed by Mitch Trubisky and Matt Nagy). If Baker Mayfield resembles his best self, +460 on the Panthers to make the playoffs is a reasonable bet.

Favorite Carolina Panthers Futures Bet

At this point in the offseason, any wager on the Panthers carries with it a certain degree of risk. With risk, however, comes value; and the potential payout of Baker leading the Panthers back to the playoffs is certainly enticing.

Be wary though, as there is a world in which Baker struggles, Rhule is fired mid-season, and rookie Matt Corral ends up starting games for the Panthers.

For these reasons, there is no fault in passing altogether on Carolina Panthers future bets. However, I do prefer a bet on the Panthers to make the playoffs rather than have to lay -125 that they win o6 games.

Bet on Baker Mayfield to take the Panthers to make the playoffs (+460), or pass altogether.
