Champions League Round of 16 Preview & Best Bets (2024)
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
RB Leipzig (+210) vs. Real Madrid (+120), DRAW (+275) | O/U 2.5 (-160/+125)
Tuesday's action gets underway with a matchup between RB Leipzig and Real Madrid. The hosts placed second in Group G (4-0-2), while the 14-time UCL champions won Group C with a perfect 6-0-0 record. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET from RB Arena in Leipzig, Germany.
These are two of the premier offenses on the European continent, so I will take this total up to 3.0 goals and lock in the over. Real Madrid found the back of the net 16 times in the group stage (2.7 GPG), while Leipzig managed 13 goals (2.2 GPG). The German side also surrendered 10 goals through the six group-stage matches (1.7 GA/G).
Let's not forget Leipzig's woes from a year ago, where they were hammered by Manchester City in the Round of 16, losing the aggregate 8-1. Marco Rose's squad plays fast and loose, and they're not afraid to get into a high-scoring barnburner with anyone. Eleven of their last 14 matches across all competitions have seen at least three goals, with half of those 14 going for at least four total tallies. I expect the offensive stars to show up in Saxony on Tuesday.
Bet: Over 3.0 (+100)
FC Copenhagen (+1200) vs. Manchester City (-400), DRAW (+550) | O/U 2.5 (-175/+140)
Copenhagen takes the cake for the toughest draw out of the group stage. The odds are heavily against them to knock off the champs, as they sit at +1200 to advance. Those are the longest odds of any team in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, City cruised to a Group G victory, going 6-0-0 while posting an 18:7 goal differential. Kickoff is scheduled for Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. ET from Parken in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Props to Copenhagen for making it out of a tough group featuring Bayern, Manchester United and Galatasaray. I think they'll be able to hang around early on in this first leg, considering it's at Parken. However, as time goes on, I think the Treble-winning Citizens will eventually break through.
This might be the squarest pick I've ever played, but sometimes, that's the route you have to go. I'll take City to win this match and for Erling Haaland to score. Pep Guardiola's men are on fire right now, rattling off 10 consecutive victories across all competitions. They have a healthy Haaland, and Kevin De Bruyne is back in charge of the midfield after his hamstring issue. De Bruyne has picked up assists in four straight matches, including adding a helper on one of Haaland's two goals in their weekend clash against Everton (2-0). City's finding its championship form again, and I think we see Haaland lead them to a victory on Tuesday.
Bet: Erling Haaland To Score & Manchester City To Win (-135)
Lazio (+425) vs. Bayern Munich (-150), DRAW (+300) | O/U 2.5 (-135/+105)
There are a pair of UCL matches on Wednesday, each kicking off at 3:00 p.m. ET. PSG hosts Real Sociedad, while Lazio squares off against Bayern Munich in Italy. Lazio captured a second-place finish in Group E, going 3-1-2. The Bavarians went 5-1-0, which was good enough to win Group A. This contest will take place at Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy.
Bayern had a major letdown in their weekend match against Bayer Leverkusen, losing 3-0. They're now five points behind Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race. Their poor form is the main reason why I'll be fading them on Wednesday. Furthermore, Bayern's pretty banged up right now as they'll be without a few key players in Kingsley Coman (leg), Alphonso Davies (knee) and Serge Gnabry (muscle). I'll take a flier on Lazio +1.0 at -150.
Maurizio Sarri's side has been excellent at home recently, going 3-1-0 over their last four matches, where they've allowed just one goal. That's hardly an anomaly, as Lazio has conceded just three times over their last 11 home matches (across all competitions)! This team is nearly impenetrable when playing in Rome, so I think they'll make life tough for Bayern on Wednesday. The Italians should be able to at least keep this game within a goal, if not threaten to win outright. Let's lock in Lazio +1.0.
Bet: Lazio +1.0 (-150)
