College Basketball Odds, Picks & Predictions: Saturday (1/13)

While College Football is finally in the rear-view mirror, and it should be all eyes on college hoops on Saturday, we are still contending with the National Football League. That’s OK, as it’s nice to have a couple of different sports options to bet on. Hopefully, you can use some of the plays below and cobble together a couple of nice cross-sport parlays to keep your weekend interesting.

It was a pretty solid start to the 2024 calendar year in this space last Saturday, going 3-1 ATS. We’ll try to keep up the good work and build that bankroll as we steam toward March Madness.

New Jersey Tech @ Vermont - 2:00 p.m. ET

It’s a little earlier than I’d like to play a game, as I tend to focus more on the late afternoon or evening window. However, the state of Vermont just went legal with online sports wagering this week, so let’s head to the Green Mountain State for the first play of the day.

NJIT has managed just four victories in the first 14 games this season, but the Highlanders give a strong effort. They’re 4-2 ATS across the past six games while cashing in each of the past four outings as a double-digit favorite.

Vermont posted a 77-72 win over UMBC on Thursday as a 17.5-point favorite, not even coming close to a cover. That’s been a theme, as the Catamounts are 1-6 ATS over the past seven outings and just 2-10 ATS in the previous 12 contests. As a double-digit favorite, UVM has failed to cover in each of the four times this season, including the past two wins over Maine and UMBC.

Bets: NJIT +16.5 (-110)

Utah Valley @ Texas Rio Grande Valley - 7:30 p.m. ET

The Wolverines of Utah Valley head down to Edinburg, Texas to tangle with the Vaqueros of UTRGV in a WAC league game. Utah Valley hasn’t had a lot of success on the road this season, winning just once in seven tries, but a handful of those games have been against the big boys like Boise State, Oregon State and Utah. And UVU is a respectable 5-3 ATS in the past eight games overall.

The Vaqueros topped Seattle 81-80 in OT last time out on Thursday, and UTRGV has cashed in each of the past three games while going 6-3 ATS in the past nine outings overall. The Rio Grande boys are starting to piece things together, especially at home, and an outright win over UVU is certainly possible. They’re 6-1 ATS in the past seven as an underdog, so take the Vaqueros with the points.

Bet: UTRGV +3.5 (-110)

Charlotte @ UTSA - 8:00 p.m. ET

The 49ers hit the road for San Antonio, Texas in this AAC battle against the Roadrunners. Charlotte scored a win over a ranked opponent last Saturday at home against FAU and carried that momentum over to an 84-76 win and cover against Tulsa. Can it bring the heat on the road, though? The Niners are 0-4 SU/ATS in four true road games this season.

Win or lose, UTSA has made it fun lately. The Roadrunners took Memphis to the mat on Wednesday, falling 107-101 in an overtime heartbreaker, as UTSA got “Quinerly’d. ” Still, the ‘Runners have won two of the past four games outright while going a perfect 4-0 ATS during the span. The offense has found itself, and UTSA is finding a way to play some close games, win or lose. Back the home side.

Bet: UTSA +5.5 (-105)

USC @ Colorado - 10:00 p.m. ET

We’ll stick with the theme with another underdog, making it a 4-dog Saturday. The Trojans are looking to pick themselves off the mat after a shocking 72-64 loss at home against Washington State on Wednesday.

This play comes with some risk, as the Trojans have also dropped the past two games in-conference on the road while going 1-3 ATS in four true road games this season. However, USC has won and covered the past three games in this series, including the past two trips to Boulder, Colo., since Jan. 20, 2022.

Colorado hasn’t exactly been killing it, either. CU has dropped three in a row while failing to cover in each. Granted, those games were all on the road, but the Bufs are just 1-4 ATS across the past five games overall. While Colorado might snap its three-game series losing streak to USC, it has no business laying double digits, or close to it, against anybody right now.

Bets: USC +9.5 (-102)
