Tuesday’s Best College Basketball Picks

Last Week: 4-0 (100%, +400) | Season: 9-1 (90.0%, +790) | Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook | All picks are for 1 unit

Coppin State Eagles (+3300) at Saint Joseph’s Hawks (-10000) | O/U 141.5 (-110/-110)

The Coppin State Eagles (0-7) and Saint Joseph’s Hawks (4-2) do battle at the Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena in Philadelphia. The Eagles have not tasted victory yet, but Coppin State is a respectable 2-2 against the spread (ATS) in the past four games.

The last time Coppin State was an underdog by more than 30 points, it was able to grab a cover at Miami on November 17. The Eagles were 37-point underdogs. They suffered a 93-63 loss to the Hurricanes. In the regular-season opener at Wake Forest, the Eagles put up a solid fight in a 64-49 loss as 33-point underdogs, comfortably covering.

For Saint Joe’s, they’re a tremendous 3-1 ATS in the past four games. Last time out, they suffered a 67-58 loss to Texas on a neutral floor as 7.5-point underdogs, but there’s no shame in that.

However, the Hawks have managed an 0-2 ATS mark as a double-digit favorite so far this season, including a stunning 73-67 loss at home against Central Connecticut State on November 8 as a 17-point favorite. Also, when St. Joe’s is favored by double digits, the under has cashed in both outings. However, that’s worth filing away for your spreadsheets, and not worth pursuing. That’s because the Hawks have cashed in each of the past three outings.

Let’s simply stick with Coppin State catching the huge amount of points.

Pick: Coppin State +30.5 (-115)

USC Upstate Spartans (+4000) at Iowa Hawkeyes (-50000) | O/U 168.5 (-115/-105)

The USC Upstate Spartans (2-6) hit the road for Carver-Hawkeye Arena to battle the Iowa Hawkeyes (5-1). The Spartans haven’t had a ton of success, losing all six times against Division I teams this season, as its only victories are against lower-level teams.

While that seems a bit ominous, the Spartans have covered in four of the past five games against Division I teams, while going 4-0 ATS in the past four tries as an underdog by nine or more points. That includes covers as a 23.5-point underdog in a 93-74 loss at Virginia Tech on November 8 and an easy cover as 29.5-point underdogs at Wake Forest in an 85-80 near-miss. USC Upstate also covered as a 9-point underdog in an 89-85 loss against UNC Wilmington.

Oh, and did we mention that the over is a perfect 6-0 in six games for the Spartans this season? They’ve scored at least 74 points in each of the past five Division I games while allowing 85+ points in all six games against Division I foes.

For the Hawkeyes, the under has cashed in four straight games. We’ll focus mostly on the spread. Iowa has managed a 2-4 ATS mark in six games against Division I opponents. Last time out, Iowa lost outright 77-69 as a 2.5-point favorite on a neutral floor at the T-Mobile Center. Back USC Upstate to cover the spread.

Picks: South Carolina Upstate +29.5 (-102)

Furman Paladins (-118) at Seattle Redhawks (-102) | O/U 141.5 (-110/-110)

The Furman Paladins (6-0) look to maintain their unblemished record against the scuffling Seattle Redhawks (2-3) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Furman has a great hoodie you can get online which reads “This is F U Country” with the team’s logo and an outline of the state of South Carolina. Ha. That’s not why I am picking the Paladins, though. They’re unbeaten and playing great basketball. This Southern Conference team has also covered all four games with a spread so far, including outright wins over Belmont, Jacksonville and Tulane. If you remember, Jacksonville beat Virginia Tech and Belmont has wins over Air Force and Oral Roberts, so Furman’s wins are good ones.

Seattle stumbled out of the chute with three straight losses to Eastern Washington, Liberty and Cal Poly. The Redhawks did bounce back with a nice win over UC San Diego last time out at home. They didn’t need the seven points as underdogs, winning outright 84-71.

While Seattle’s win was nice, Furman has had a much better body of work against a stronger slate of teams. Look for the Paladins to get the dub and the cover.

Pick: Furman -1.5 (-104)
