College Football Week 0 Picks & Predictions

Florida State vs. Georgia Tech

Lots of travel can be weird, and this game is in Ireland. Florida State has a lot of 'or’s' on the initial depth chart. FSU OC Alex Atkins is suspended for the first 3 games. I'm interested to see the reaction from Mike Norvell, who did not make the playoff last season and could refuse to take 'the foot off the gas.' Georgia Tech is an experienced group on offense. I think this line is close enough, considering the weirdness of the travel. This line would probably be way bigger without it and the vast gap in talent level between these teams.

Pick: Over 55.5

SMU vs. Nevada

SMU's first game as a Member of the ACC. SMU returns eight starters on defense and 10 of their top 11 tacklers from last season. Roster strength is SMU by a mile in this one. Nevada has a new HC in Jeff Choate taking over after Nevada was 2-10 LY. Jeff Choate worked a rebuild at Montana State, but it did take four seasons, and they are starting at the bottom here. I don't really like the spread because SMU can dominate this team and set the pace. The total is achievable for SMU alone, too, but I'm not convinced that Nevada will score much at all.

Pick: SMU -26.5

Other Week 0 College Football Games

I’ll break down the other two games on the Week 0 College Football slate below. I don’t have official picks for either game.

Montana State vs. New Mexico
New Mexico goes into this game with a new HC, 11 transfer starters and only 6 returning starters. NM ranks 100 or worse at all but 1 position group and 120th or worse in 5 of 8 groups. Montana State ranks #4 in the Preseason FCS poll. Montana State averaged the second-most points in the FCS last season and were 1st in YPP.

Delaware State vs. Hawaii
Hawai'i and New Mexico are comparable in talent level but Hawai'i ranks 7th in returning production. Delaware State is coming off a 1 win season at the FCS level. Hawai'i should use this game to build confidence. With continuity on offense, the travel for Delaware St, and the discrepancy in the talent level this should be a lopsided victory for Hawai'i.
