College Football Week 4 Odds, Picks & Prediction: Boston College vs. Florida State

This feels like a sneaky opportunity to get hidden value on an underdog that nobody wants to bet on.

The favorite, Florida State, is coming off a 35-31 road win over Louisville last Friday to improve to 3-0. But the Seminoles lost their best offensive and defensive players - FSU QB Jordan Travis and DE Jared Verse - to lower-body injuries.

FSU HC Mike Norvell has expressed cryptic optimism about those two, as well as OL Robert Scott, DT Malcom Ray, DT Fabien Lovett and CB Omarion Cooper. Scott, Ray and Cooper were injured against Louisville, while Lovett didn't travel with the team due to an injury he suffered against LSU.

But tellingly, Norvell stopped there, refusing to get into details of prognosis or timeline for any of his injured charges. On Tuesday, I heard that there's very little chance that we see Travis this weekend. But on Wednesday, Travis had kicked the walking boot and returned to practice. That gives some hope that Travis could play. But if Travis does, his mobility is likely to be greatly compromised.

FSU's offensive improvement this season can be traced to improvements in its passing game. Opponents could no longer stack the box against FSU's vaunted running game. But whether Travis plays compromised, or doesn't play at all, his legs, his greatest source of value on the field, will likely not be a big factor.

Boston College has a few NFL players on offense - QB Phil Jurkovec and WR Zay Flowers - but they have played down this season because of poor OL play. With FSU's injuries in the front seven, the Seminoles wouldn't appear as equipped to take advantage of that weakness as they usually are.

BC's strength is its defense, particularly its run defense. That unit would be tested against a full-strength FSU, but this isn't a full-strength FSU. In addition to not having to worry as much about Travis' out-of-the-pocket machinations, FSU also may be without Scott again. Scott is one of FSU's best offensive linemen.

Similarly, FSU's defense at full strength would abuse this BC offensive line. But FSU's front-seven - no matter who ends up playing - isn't going to be at full strength.

BC should have more success tamping down on FSU's running game than any previous opponent. And if Verse and one of of FSU's core DTs don't play, the Seminoles likely won't be able to exploit BC's greatest weakness.

I think the Eagles make this game much more interesting than experts expect.
