We head to Week 4 of the 2022 college football season this week, as a host of good matchups are on deck beginning on Thursday. As conference play begins throughout the country, key games are already here in the season-long outlook.

Let’s take a closer look at two I’m keyed in on as kickoff approaches.

Syracuse Orangemen -10.5 vs. Virginia Cavaliers (-110)

On Friday night in Syracuse, two ACC rivals will square off when the unbeaten Orangemen host the 2-1 Cavaliers. The home team’s thrilling 32-29 victory over Purdue last week will need to be swiftly forgotten because UVA is coming to town, giving quarterback Garrett Shrader a difficult challenge. Shrader is quietly putting together a strong season with 705 yards in the air and 202 more on the ground, as well as 11 total touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Brian Armstrong, the quarterback for Virginia, is once again in charge, but he manages the game more than goes out and wins it. To this point, the Cavaliers have depended heavily on their running game, with Xavier Brown, a freshman running back, leading the way with 7.2 yards per game.

Although this figure has increased since starting at Syracuse -9, I don’t think UVA will be able to match the offensive effectiveness that Shrader and the Orange present.

Michigan Wolverines -16.5 vs. Maryland Terrapins (-110)

This week will mark the official start of the Big Ten season between two formidable foes as Maryland travels to face a surging Michigan squad. The Wolverines have dominated despite the inferior competition, winning all three games by a total score of 166-17. Last week, Michigan’s RB1 Blake Corum set a school record by rushing for five touchdowns, while Michigan’s defense was once again outstanding.

The Wolverines have given JJ McCarthy the reins at quarterback because the season’s starter Cade McNamara is anticipated to lose some time due to an injury.

With seven total touchdown passes and a completion percentage of 77% thus far this season for the Terrapins, QB1 Taulia Tagovailoa appears to have significantly improved. Although Maryland has done okay so far, they haven’t been put to the test as they will be on Saturday, and I don’t think they have the talent to compete. Although head coach Mike Locksley will develop a solid game plan, I don’t think it will stand up as they travel to a raucous crowd Saturday night in Michigan.
