Top College Football Odds & Picks: Week 4 (Friday)

Stanford vs. Syracuse

It’s a sentence that only makes sense in college football in 2024: Stanford plays their first ACC game Friday night as they travel to Syracuse to take on the Orange. Additionally it’ll be the first true east coast road game for the Cardinal since traveling to UCF in the Fall of 2019. A game where they left in defeat, 45-27. This year, the Cardinal come in 1-1 with a loss to TCU and a win over FCS Cal Poly. They were barely edged by TCU, but the box score indicates that this one was closer than it should have been. Stanford was outgained 457-286 but the Horned Frogs turned the ball over twice and committed seven penalties for 100 yards, making this outcome tighter. Underlying metrics like EPA per play don’t like Stanford either. They rank 102nd on offense and 95th on defense. On the other side, Syracuse is a metrics darling. 13th in offensive EPA per play, led by Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord who once again is putting together one of the most effective passing attacks in the country, Syracuse has put together a formidable offense in the first year under Fran Brown. It would be tough to imagine Stanford keeping this game close. This game is a big mismatch and the spread doesn’t show it enough making the favorite a valuable play.

Pick: Syracuse -8.5

Illinois vs. Nebraska

Yes, the Illinois Fighting Illini are 3-0 for the first time since 2011. But it’s worth noting that those three wins haven’t come against exactly the stiffest competition. The Illini have knocked off Eastern Illinois and Central Michigan and “upset” a ranked Kansas team that just lost at home to UNLV a week ago. Sure, Nebraska hasn’t exactly taken on a murderer’s row of opponents either. But I have more faith in quarterback Dylan Railoa than Illinois’ Luke Altmeyer. I also trust a Nebraska defense that ranks top-35 in both passing and rushing yards allowed per attempt. Nebraska also should be able to find success on the ground against an Illini defense that’s allowed more than four yards per attempt in their first three games.

Pick: Nebraska -7
