College Football Week 5 Early Odds, Picks & Prediction: Boise State vs. San Diego State

Boise State fired OC Tim Plough on Saturday, one day after the Broncos were stunned 27-10 at UTEP. That’s the first time since 1997 that Boise State didn’t reach either 100 passing yards or 100 rushing yards in a game.

Boise State’s offense was putrid against Oregon State in addition to UTEP (the other two opponents were an FCS team and New Mexico). Boise State rewound the clock to replace Plough, naming Dirk Koetter interim OC. Koetter, a former NFL head coach, went 26-10 as Boise State’s head coach from 1998-2000.

That’s not the only seismic change Boise State is going through this week. Former starting QB Hank Bachmeier announced Monday morning that he’s leaving the program and entering the transfer portal.

Bachmeier turned the ball over three times while completing only four passes in the opener against Oregon State before getting benched. Against UTEP, Bachmeier went 13-of-34 for 93 yards and a touchdown. It would not be an understatement to say that Bachmeier’s performances in both games directly led to the losses.

Boise State will turn its QB job over to redshirt freshman Taylen Green. Green is different from the procession of pocket-passing quarterbacks BSU has had over the last decade-plus. He’s a 6’6/220 dual-threat who was also a track standout in high school.

In Green’s first action, against Oregon State, coming on in relief of Bachmeier, he became the first Broncos quarterback since 2014 to rush for more than 100 yards.

What is Betting Against the Spread?

Betting “against the spread” refers to the act of choosing the winning team based on a numeric handicap placed on the team that oddsmakers believe is superior, rather than picking the outright winner. For example, if the Rams face the Bengals, and oddsmakers set the spread at Rams -3.5, you would need Los Angeles to win by 4 or more points in order to cash your Rams bet.

What is an Over/Under Bet?

Over/Under is a wager based on how many points you think will be scored in a specific game. Oddsmakers set the total, and bettors decide whether the final score will be higher or lower than that number. If an Over/Under is set at 44.5 points and you bet Over, you will need the combined score of both teams to be 45 points or higher to win your bet.

What is a Moneyline Bet?

A moneyline bet involves choosing which team you believe will win a specific matchup. The moneyline favorite carries a minus designation, like -130. This means that you need to wager $130 to earn a $100 profit. Conversely, the underdog carries a plus designation, like +110. This means that you win $110 in profit on a $100 bet.
