Top College Football Picks: Week 9 (Thursday)
Georgia Southern vs. Old Dominion
Georgia Southern and Old Dominion play a Thursday night game that will have a big impact on the Sun Belt Conference race. Georgia Southern has run out to a 3-0 conference record with wins over James Madison and Marshall. Theyâll be on the road for this one in a game where the advanced stats make this one fairly even and the spread indicates the same. Georgia Southern has impressed the last two games, slowing down two very strong offenses in James Madison and Marshall. They allowed 18.5 PPG and just 323.5 yards of offense in the two contests. They havenât allowed an opponent outside of Boise State and Ole Miss to score more than 23 all season. Old Dominion doesnât have the offense to change that trend. They rank just 100th in EPA per play including a dreadful 109th in passing. I expect Georgia Southern to pull out the road win and extend their unbeaten conference record.
Pick: Georgia Southern +2

Syracuse vs. Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Panthers are already eligible for a bowl game at 6-0. However, Pittsburgh is worried about way more than just a bowl game. They're looking to win the ACC and are currently ranked No. 19 in the country. But let's take a step back. The Panthers have already won three super tight games. Pittsburgh squeezed by but hasn't dominated opponents. It took a fourth-quarter comeback against Cincinnati, a back-and-forth finish against West Virginia, and a hold-on win against California, where the Panthers didn't score in the entire second half. Pittsburgh isn't an elite team, despite their record and rankings. Instead, the offense's passing game is overrated, and the offensive line isn't doing much to help in the run game. The defense certainly deserves credit, but it'll struggle against Syracuse, which has a good quarterback, Kyle McCord. McCord has much better receivers and should completely outplay Eli Holstein despite being on the road. He'll make more significant plays and better decisions. Give me Syracuse at +5.5. You can even consider Syracuse on the moneyline.
Pick: Syracuse +5.5
