2024 NCAA Tournament Odds & Picks: Duke vs. Vermont
Duke 2024 NCAA Tournament Preview
Itâs been a roller coaster of a month for Duke fans. Almost losing Kyle Filipowski after losing to Wake Forest, dropping the last home game of the season to North Carolina, and then making a quick ACC tournament exit in a defeat to North Carolina State. Momentum is not on the side of the Blue Devils. What is on their side is their dynamic offense. Ranking in the top 10 in KenPom efficiency, Duke can score from all levels of the court. They rank in the top 10 in three-point shooting percentage while attempting their fair share of near-proximity looks.
Jon Scheyerâs team seems to perform better against slower-paced teams, and with a lack of depth, it makes sense. The question for Duke here is, if not Filipowski, who? Despite the forward scoring 28 against NC State, Duke still lost. Will anyone else step up for Duke to make a run? Tyrese Procto, Mark Mitchell, and sharp-shooting Jeremy Roach are all capable; they just have to do so consistently. The Blue Devils will provide solid defense while limiting the perimeter look, grabbing defensive boards and avoiding fouls so nothing will come easy for their opponent. They have ranked as a top-10 team all year and a top-10 metric team since February 1st and against top-100 opponents. Duke appears to have a high floor, but it remains questionable how high their ceiling is.
Vermont 2024 NCAA Tournament Preview
Out of the American East, the Catamounts of Vermont stand out as the auto-bid selection. Vermontâs primary strength lies in its defensive prowess, as it ranks in the top 60 in defensive efficiency. They excel in limiting opponentsâ shooting percentages, particularly from beyond the arc, where they hold opponents to just 32% three-point shooting, ranking top 50 nationally. Additionally, their defense is effective in restricting mid-range and overall field goal percentages.
Offensively, more leaves to be desired by Vermont, with one of the lowest offensive rebound percentages in the nation and a below-average free throw rate. With a lacking perimeter threat, it shouldnât be that difficult to game plan around John Beckerâs squad. Despite offensive inefficiencies, Vermont is recognized as one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball, currently ranked 21st in consistency. If they stay consistent with their slow play and take care of the ball while eliminating second-chance looks with a top-10 defensive rebound percentage, an upset is well within the works if their opponent has an off-night shooting. Beyond that, their ceiling is capped.
2024 NCAA Tournament Predictions: Duke vs. Vermont
Every year, the Vermont Catamounts are a sneaky underdog play. And every year, the Catamounts don't get the job done. Don't count on it against the Duke Blue Devils. Duke has one of the best offenses in the nation and ranks in the top 30 in offensive and defensive efficiency this year. Its metrics and personnel could get them into the Final Four and beyond. Once the Catamounts struggle from the field against Duke's length, they won't be able to add second chances and offensive rebounds. Don't back the potential trendy underdog in Vermont. It never works with Vermont. Take Duke.
