French Open 2022: Women’s Finals Preview and Prediction

History of some sort is bound to be made no matter who emerges victorious at th2 2022 Women’s French Open final. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has won 35 consecutive matches, breaking a tie with Serena Williams for the most successive victories this century. Swiatek is within reach of cracking the top ten list of most consecutive wins by a woman all-time, as Martina Navratilova (1982) and Chris Evert (1975-76) each won 41 straight. A victory would also make Swiatek the first woman to win six consecutive tournaments since Justine Henin in 2007-08.

For Coco Gauff, she is looking to make history of a different kind by breaking through for her first career Grand Slam title. At 18 years old, Gauff would be the eighth-youngest woman to win her first Grand Slam and the 15th-youngest winner. She would also be the fifth-youngest French Open winner behind Monica Seles (1990, 1991), Arantxa Sanchez Vicario (1989), and Steffi Graf (1987).

So what kind of history will be made on Saturday?

Iga Swiatek -5.5 Games vs. Coco Gauff  (-130), Correct Score First Set Swiatek 6-2 (+400),

Correct Score First Set Swiatek 6-3 (+300)

Coco Gauff has dominated in her first six victories, winning all in straight sets and only being pushed to a tiebreak once. Perhaps we should not be surprised by this dominance, as Gauff won the 2018 French Open Juniors title at age 14, making her the youngest junior Grand Slam Champion since Martina Hingis in 1994. Thus, Gauff is clearly comfortable on clay but is, unfortunately, facing the only player who has been as equally or more dominant than her.

Swiatek does have one hiccup, a loss in a first-set tiebreak in the fourth round against Qinwen Zhang. However, Swiatek has won ten of her 12 sets at Roland Garros overall by a score of 6-3 or better, so like Gauff, she has not been challenged much in this run.

Swiatek has won 23 of her previous 25 matches in straight sets, so it is hard to find wagers on her that do not break the bank. She is a -700 moneyline favorite to win outright and has -245 odds to win in straight sets. Thus, we are getting creative with our wagers with a game spread prop and two correct first set scores that pay plus money.

Dominating in finals is nothing new to Swiatek, as she has won her last eight WTA finals in straight sets. In addition, all eight have gone under the total match projected games line, so we are confident in laying the -5.5 game spread. Furthermore, she has won the first set 6-2 in three of her last five WTA finals, and with the way she has returned serve all tournament, she should be in line for at least one break of Gauff’s serve.
