Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Background and Overview
This is undoubtedly one of the most unlikely of Grand Slam finals pairings in tennis history. For Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, it has been a long time coming. Saturday's French Open Final marks her first appearance in a Grand Slam championship match in 52 career major tournaments. She is the first woman ever to reach a final after playing in more than 50 majors. Needless to say, the 29-year-old Russian will have an experience advantage on Saturday. Although she has not had success in Grand Slams, Pavlyuchenkova does claim 12 career WTA tour titles.
Pavlyuchenkova's game is best suited for the slow clay court surfaces at Roland Garros. Although seeded 31st in the draw herself, she still had to knock off a trio of seeded contenders to reach the semifinals. She saw each of her matches against Aryna Sabalenka, Victoria Azarenka, and Elena Rybakina go a full three sets. Such was not the case in Thursday's semifinal against big-hitter Tamara Zidansek. Pavlyuchenkova stayed calm throughout to earn a 7-5 6-4 win and advance to the championship match. She had 19 winners and 22 unforced errors in the match.
Barbora Krejcikova Background and Overview
While she won't have the edge in experience, Barbora Krejcikova will enter the French Open Women's Final red hot. Her semifinal victory over 17th-seeded Maria Sakkari marked her 11th consecutive match win. This includes her first career WTA singles title, which she won last month at the Internationaux de Strasbourg tournament. Up until recently, Krejcikova had far more professional success as a doubles player. She captured major doubles titles at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2018. She also played in the doubles final at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Like her opponent in the French Open Final, Krejcikova had to knock off three seeded players in the draw to make it this far. She only dropped five games in a shocking Second Round win over 5-seed Elina Svitolina and also upset young American Coco Gauff in the Quarterfinals. Krejcikova's semifinals match with Sakkari is the only one to extend to a third set. A botched ruling from the chair umpire actually forced Krejcikova to win the match twice. It was an impressive display of composure from the 24-year-old Czech player to maintain her focus and overcome the officiating error.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs. Barbora Krejcikova Head-to-Head History
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Barbora Krejcikova have never faced each other in singles competition before Saturday's French Open Women's Final.
French Open Women's Final Prediction
While Barbora Krejcikova is clearly riding the hot hand, reaching a Grand Slam final is no easy task. This is something that Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova knows first hand. The WTA veteran may never have this opportunity again, and she undoubtedly recognizes this.
In addition to the experience factor, Pavlyuchenkova will have a decisive advantage when it comes to rest on Saturday. For starters, her semifinal victory took just over one and a half hours to complete. On the other hand, Krejcikova's three-set marathon lasted well over three hours. In addition, Krejcikova is still alive in the French Open doubles draw. She will play in a semifinal match on Friday, meaning she will not have even a full day to rest and recover ahead of the singles final. Rest and experience could be the underlying combination that propels Pavlyuchenkpova to her long-awaited first Grand Slam title.
