Colorado Rockies @ Arizona Diamondbacks

Many project the Colorado Rockies to be among the worst teams in the league this season. They did little to dispel that belief, falling 16-1 to Arizona on Opening Day. While the score may not be quite as lopsided on Friday, I expect the Diamondbacks to secure another easy victory against their division rivals in this matchup.

For the next two legs of my SGP, I’ll choose Ketel Marte to score a run and Lourdes Gurriel to drive in a run. Marte scored three runs in the opener, while Gurriel drove in five. Both players have homered against Rockies starter Cal Quantrill, who is one of the more hittable pitchers in baseball.

For my final leg, I’ll go with Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly to record at least five strikeouts in this game. Kelly dominated the Rockies last season to the tune of 28 strikeouts in just 19 innings. My only concern is this is Kelly’s first start of the season, so the pitch count may not be as high as it would be later in the year.

Golden State Warriors @ Charlotte Hornets

The Warriors gutted out an emotional win on Wednesday. In the midst of a tight playoff race, it was a win they badly needed. They’ll be looking for a strong start against the Hornets on Friday, and that begins with a First Basket.

Charlotte is one of the worst teams in the league in terms of this prop. They have scored first in under 40% of their games this season and have been particularly weak against opposing wings when it comes to giving up a first score. This bodes well for the Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins, who has had success with this prop since coming to Golden State.

Wiggins only has 51 starts on the season, but he’s cashed a First Basket seven times this year. That’s off the back of 13 first-team scores. He takes the first shot for Golden State in about one-third of the games he starts. It’s a great matchup for Wiggins, and I’ll be looking for him to cash another First Basket ticket on Friday.

Bet: Andrew Wiggins (+850)

New Jersey Devils @ Buffalo Sabres

This is an interesting battle between two teams getting better results than their play has warranted. New Jersey enters this game with a goals-for percentage of 53.85% at 5-on-5 over their last 10 games. Buffalo’s goals-for percentage is slightly better. However, both teams’ expected goals-for ratios during this span are well below 50%, indicating both teams might be due for some regression.

The story for the Devils has been lousy goaltending. They’ve completely revamped their goaltending tandem, which now features Jake Allen and Kaapo Kahkonen. The revamp has paid off, as the Devils have posted a save percentage of 92.86% over their last 10 games. If New Jersey had gotten this type of goaltending earlier in the year, their 2023-24 season could’ve been completely different.

Speaking of hot goaltending, Buffalo has gotten stellar play between the pipes from the tandem of Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Devon Levi. Both rank inside the top 25 in goals saved above expected. Levi is slated to get the start Friday night.

The Devils are the better team in better form when it comes to controlling possession and generating scoring chances. However, they are a really tough team to trust as a road favorite. My lean would be New Jersey on the side.

Bet: Devils ML (-118)
