Indianapolis Colts @ Jacksonville Jaguars

First place in the AFC South is on the line in this game. These two teams met back in Week 1, with the Jaguars spoiling the debut of Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson 31-21 thanks to a balanced Jacksonville attack. Richardson will miss the rematch due to a shoulder injury that has landed him on injured reserve. That means backup Gardner Minshew gets the start for the Colts. The sixth-round pick out of Washington State began his career with the Jags, so this is a little bit of a revenge game for the signal caller.

Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars are riding high after knocking off Buffalo in London, England, last week. Jacksonville has put up at least 23 points in each of their three wins, and I like them to win again on Sunday, sweeping the season series and taking sole possession of first in the division. Travis Etienne finally broke out against Buffalo with 136 yards and two touchdowns, and I expect him to carry that momentum into this week's game. While this matchup probably won't go well over the number, backing the over is the better play here.

Bet: Over 44.5 (-105)

#8 Oregon Ducks @ #7 Washington Huskies

  • Leg 1: Over 67.5 (-105)
  • Leg 2: Michael Penix Jr. Over 349.5 Passing Yards (-114)
  • Leg 3: Bo Nix Over 20.5 Rushing Yards (-114)

This will be the game to watch, with two of the most explosive offenses in the country battling in what could determine which team goes to the Pac-12 Championship. It also features two marquee quarterbacks, Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr., who are top five in passer efficiency and Heisman odds. It feels like with these two teams, the total should be more than 70, especially with the 71 total points from last season. With it being at 67, take the over.

Penix Jr. will get over 2,000 yards and could become the nation's passing leader after this game. Yes, 349 passing yards is a big number, but Penix has gone over this in four of five games and hit the 400 mark in last year's matchup against Oregon.

We've seen Bo Nix the passer more than the runner this year. He's only eclipsed six rushing attempts once in five games. By his fifth game last year, he had done it four times. In a matchup where every yard could matter against an offense of their equal, we should see Nix use his legs more than he has.

Pittsburgh Penguins @ Washington Capitals

The Penguins suffered a massively disappointing loss in their season debut against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, a game they lost 4-2 after owning a two-goal advantage past the halfway mark. If I'm a Penguins fan, I'm not as much troubled about the result as I am about the fact that the Blackhawks didn't even look good. Pittsburgh just looked bad.

The bottom six of the forward group was practically non-existent while the blue line was allowing the young Hawks forwards to get looks on net as much as possible. At 5-on-5, Pittsburgh generated just 2.29 expected goals for (xGF). Goaltender Tristan Jarry wasn't bad, but he wasn't great either, as he performed exactly how you would expect him to, given the looks he faced.

On the other side, the Washington Capitals make their season debut. Washington is a sneaky-deep team, and while I think it has a long road this season to make the playoffs, we should expect them to at least be in the conversation. Injuries really hampered the Caps last year, and now they are healthy outside of newly-acquired Max Pacioretty. While the lineup remains virtually identical (albeit healthier), the biggest change for Washington this season is behind the bench, as Spencer Carbery is the new coach. It’s a big question mark, as this is the 2021 AHL Coach of the Year’s first stint as a head coach in the NHL.

Darcy Kuemper will get the start between the pipes for the Caps, which should be another advantage for Washington in this contest. That is not to say that Jarry is bad or Kuemper is some Vezina-caliber netminder, but the latter finished last season higher in goals saved above expected per 60 minutes (GSAx/60) at 5-on-5. I give the edge to Kuemper, but even if you want to call the goaltending matchup a wash, Washington still boasts the stronger blue line and deeper offense. Pittsburgh is more top-heavy offensively, but is that enough to justify -120 on the road in Washington's season debut after how the Pens looked against Chicago? I don't think so.

Bet: Capitals ML (+100)
